This job advert is for the role of a Naval Ship Structural Engineer working in the Marine & Offshore Structures team as part of the UK & Ireland Technical Support Office. Whilst the successful candidate would be principally be based at our Global Technology Centre in Southampton, we work flexibly at Lloyds Register so a mixture of home and regular office working would be offered.
LR has been applying its Naval Ship Rules for over 20 years to an impressive range of ships and latterly our expertise in product verification to submarines. We have built a reputation for supporting shipyards and designers with flexible and innovative solutions which recognise the unique naval operating environment.
As part of a dedicated team, supporting a growth area of the business, you will principally be working on a variety of new-build and existing naval ship projects for builders around the world. Your work will involve supporting our local and global clients and our site surveyors by undertaking design appraisal, design support work, and answering a wide range of technical queries.
You will have access to a range of training courses and professional development opportunities to develop your knowledge and expertise. Working at Lloyd's Register, you will be part of a wider team working alongside many other engineering, software, and consultancy departments.
Your duties will include:
- Working as a technical member of the Marine & Offshore Structures team carrying out design appraisal, independent calculations, and consultancy against a range of Class Rules and statutory codes. You will be principally working with Naval vessels but there will be opportunities to be involved with other ship types, including Special Service Craft, in line with business needs.
- Contributing ideas and creative solutions for a variety of structural problems through direct calculations and application of LR’s Rules and Regulations & other international standards and codes.
- Providing technical advice to internal and external clients globally, which will include designers, shipyards and other LR surveyors and specialists.
- Contributing to Technology and Rule Development Projects and Proposals to ensure our Rules remain up to date and in line with the latest industry innovations.
- Assisting the team leader in the bid and win process for new projects by accurately estimating time requirements.
- Managing plan approval projects including monitoring of project progress and spend against budget and contractual requirements.
- Actively seeking to ensure client satisfaction and to generate new opportunities with our clients.
- The above description does not preclude the assignment of other duties by the Technical Manager of Ship Structures Department or their line manager.
Technical / Professional Qualifications / Requirements:
- The candidate should have a degree in naval architecture, structural engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register.
- Experience of naval ship structural design and the application of Class Rules to the design and construction of the ship types described above. Experience with the practical application of LR’s Class Rules (or equivalent) is desirable
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
- Working towards achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
- Appropriate UK Security Clearance (SC level) or ability to achieve such clearance.
- Proficiency in the English Language (written and oral) commensurate with the work and an ability to write detailed technical reports and design appraisal documents.
- The individual should have an understanding of the responsibilities of a Classification Society, and the interface between Class Rules, Statutory Regulations and the Naval Ship Code.
