In this role, you will be part of our Global Technical Support Office, specifically supporting the Technical Safety Team. You’ll gain hands-on experience performing Design Appraisal and Type Approval of complex safety systems and arrangements in line with statutory codes, international standards, and our rules. Additionally, you will assist colleagues and provide pragmatic, safety-focused advice to clients, helping them achieve compliance and safety excellence.

The Role :

 

The Technical Safety Team within the organisations Global Technical Support Office has a strong specialisation in design review of Technical Safety Systems for marine, offshore and onshore oil and gas and renewables facilities, which are referred to in accordance with Statutory Regulations, Flag State Requirements and Classification Rules and International Standards.

The work the Technical Safety Team undertakes has helped cement LR’s position as one of the leading classification societies in the maritime industry and key Certification provided for fire protection products on marine and offshore hydrocarbon facilities.

Working with a global team of engineers, field surveyors, and clients to propose innovative solutions to problems, and advise on the time and cost of work involved. Continuous focus on professional development, actively seeking out opportunities to enhance expertise and keep skills fully up to date.

As an Assistant Technical Safety Engineer you will have the opportunity to assist in providing expert specialist technical advice which customers expect from Lloyd’s Register. Bringing a sophisticated approach to problem solving, you’ll effectively manage the most complex aspects of this multidisciplinary project, combining innovative thinking with precise rigour.

Reporting to the Team Lead the ‘Key Responsibilities’ are:

  • To assist in the design appraisal process of marine, offshore and onshore oil and gas and renewables industries technical safety arrangements and systems* against Codes and Standards and Regulations and Client project requirements, within agreed parameters that includes budget constraints and contractual requirements.

*  Broad Technical Areas: Fire & Gas Detection, Active Fire Protection, Passive Fire Protection, Cryogenic Exposure Protection, Escape, Evacuation and Rescue Facilities, Technical Safety Studies.

  • To assist in the Type Approval process of Cryogenic and Passive Fire Protection products to various international codes and standards in a consistent and timely manner.
  • To assist in providing sound Technical and Regulatory guidance to Clients during the design and construction phase and participate in meetings or workshops where required.
  • To perform assessments and provide input for specialist advice for service delivery, research or development work within agreed parameters that includes budget constraints and contractual requirements.
  • To apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems and services.
  • To produce the deliverable within the agreed parameters in a defined format.
  • To assess / recommend the time / value of the work to be undertaken for an internal / external client within an agreed fee / cost structure.
  • To discuss / present the deliverable with the internal / external client and be able to suggest alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • Undertake administration as required in line with current processes and procedures.
  • To pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness.
  • To assist in service delivery improvement by communicating internal / external client feedback as appropriate.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Conduct occasional site visits at various ship yards, client sites, testing laboratories, or production facilities as required to successfully complete projects.
  • To make suggestions to improve service delivery effectiveness through changes to processes or work scope such that it leads to a reduction in appraisal effort (where applicable).
  • Assisting the business in the bid and win process for new projects by accurately estimating time requirements for a range of projects.

 

What you bring

 

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme).
  • Some working experience in a related Technical Safety Engineering area would be desirable.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution with the aspiration to work towards achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • A practical, adaptable and well organised approach - and the ability to      work to tight deadlines.
  • To demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills – we are a business based on people and relationships as much as technical expertise.
  • Possess flexible attitude, effective interpersonal skills, strong analytical skills, and can provide technical, commercial, and people communication.
  • Competency with MS Office packages in order to efficiently manage data; create spreadsheets and produce reports, KPIs and recommendations.
  • Basic project management techniques are desirable.
  • Some knowledge of marine, offshore and onshore oil and gas and renewables sectors Fire Protection Products and Safety Legislation for marine, onshore and offshore facilities
  • Knowledge of some relevant regulations, codes and standards relating to the technical safety field.
