A vacancy exists for a Lead Technical Specialist in our Floating structures Team in our Technical Support Office in Aberdeen or Southampton, UK. The Lead Naval Architect will be expected to carry out analysis and design appraisal work and to supervise others. He/she will be responsible for the quality and technical correctness of work carried out under his supervision. The candidate is expected to lead and make significant contributions to technology projects related to oil & gas, renewables (wind and marine energy) and novel technology qualification as well as publishing papers in international journals and conferences. The candidate will be representing LR in the industry forums, international codes/standards committees and will be actively involved in updating LR Rules, Recommended practices and Guidance Notes. It is anticipated that short stays elsewhere will be a necessary part of the role as will some element of travel.

The ideal candidate should have a broad knowledge of floating units of all types (and in particular those related to hydrocarbon extraction) coupled with experience in design and analysis aspects of hull structures and mooring systems. Knowledge of relevant codes and standards including Lloyd’s Register’s Rules related to such systems is considered essential.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing specialist support services to assist builders, designers, owners and colleagues in the interpretation and application of the relevant rules and regulations. Represent LR to external clients, regulators and other stakeholders. 
  • Assessing design compliance of hull structures and/or mooring and anchoring systems related to floating units and review of supporting analysis reports. 
  • To carry out analysis and design appraisal work and to supervise others 
  • To support activities related to Technology Projects and Rules development in areas of mooring and structures. 


Technical / Professional Qualifications / Requirements: 

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or Naval Architecture 
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution. 
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status. 
  • Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work. 
  • A broad knowledge of floating units of all types (and in particular those related to hydrocarbon extraction) coupled with experience in design and analysis aspects of hull structures and mooring systems. 
  • Significant appreciation of moorings and hull structural hydrodynamic and fatigue issues, particularly in relation to permanently moored systems. 
  • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards including Lloyd’s Register’s Rules related to such systems. 
  • An understanding of the procedures and practices of Classification as applicable to the upstream industry. 
  • An understanding of the methods used to derive site specific loadings from metocean data.  
  • Experience in design appraisal and structural analysis of floating structures including oil tanker hull structures  
  • Knowledgeable regarding codes and standards relating to hull structures and mooring systems, Classification Rules, SOLAS and MODU codes including national authority requirements.  
  • Knowledge and experience related to floating offshore wind structures will be considered as an advantage.
