As part of an on-going commitment to providing our clients with an exceptional experience, Lloyd’s Register is seeking to expand its team of Engineering Specialists within the Machinery and Rotating Equipment Team.  The team is based in Southampton and Aberdeen and delivers classification, appraisal, verification and certification services for machinery, equipment and systems in the marine and offshore industries.

About the role

The role is intended to be based in Aberdeen, however, should the right candidate wish to work in the Southampton office, then this would be considered on a personal and works needs basis. 

 

The role will promote our services for the Offshore sector through:

  • Performing design appraisal activities for a variety of process, power generation and safety related equipment for compliance with Lloyd’s Register’s Classification Rules, Verification Schemes and Third Party Certification;
  • Carrying out independent review and calculations, particularly for new and novel designs which may not be fully covered by Lloyd’s Register’s existing Rules and Regulations;
  • Supporting the quality and growth of Lloyd’s Register’s business globally by providing technical support and guidance to colleagues and clients;
  • Discussing/presenting design appraisal conclusions with internal and external clients and suggesting/influencing alternative solutions where appropriate;
  • Supporting Research and Development projects to ensure that the latest technologies are applied safely within the marine environment and assist in Lloyd’s Register’s technical development;
  • Pursuing Continuous Professional Development maintaining up-to-date knowledge and awareness of the Offshore industry;
  • Opportunities also exist to support Lloyd’s Register’s activities in design appraisal and Classification of ships and other Marine industry sectors.

 

About you

The successful candidate will:

  • Possess working experience with process compressors/pumps, gas and steam turbines, winches, gearings, swivel and turrets and other rotating equipment for the oil and gas, refinery and petrochemical industries.  In addition, experience in rotodynamics analysis is preferred;
  • Be familiar with the following rules and codes: Lloyd’s Register’s Offshore Rules, SOLAS, API (610-619) Pumps / Compressors / Turbines ), ISO, OCIMF, NFPA;
  • Possess a degree, or equivalent, from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of a two years’ programme) or qualifications from an offshore, marine or nautical institution. Relevant sea-going experience as a certified ship’s engineer officer would additionally be considered;
  • Have membership of an appropriate professional institution;
  • Be a Chartered Engineer or working towards achieving Chartered or Incorporated status;
  • Ideally, have experience in using engineering software, such as Mathcad® and Finite Element programmes;
  • Be computer literate in all Microsoft applications;
  • Be proficient in the English Language, possessing good written and verbal communication skills;
  • Take personal responsibility for ensuring that client needs are met, including planning and prioritisation of workload;
  • Understand issues and challenges to evaluate and develop solutions;
  • Make well thought through decisions, understanding their technical and commercial impact;
  • Have a flexible attitude, actively involving, engaging and supporting colleagues.
