What we’re looking for
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has been appointed as the classification society for Australia’s Hunter Class Frigate Program, the largest surface ship project in the nation’s defense history.
Through Hunter, BAE Systems Australia’s shipbuilding business, ASC Shipbuilding, will deliver nine anti-submarine warfare frigates, known as the Hunter class, to the Royal Australian Navy.
ASC Shipbuilding recently awarded LR the contract to provide tailored Naval Classification and Certification Services for the Hunter program’s prototyping phase, which is on track to cut steel in December.
Naval Classification and Certification Services will be delivered by the LR Australia team, who will ensure that the Hunter program meets Naval Classification and Certification requirements. The team will be co-located with ASC Shipbuilding employees at the state-of-the-art shipyard at Osborne, in South Australia.
As a result, LR is looking to expand it's new building naval team with the addition of a hull surveyor.
We are seeking a seasoned professional with new-building experience to join our site-based team at Osbourne (Adelaide) and provide hull construction survey oversight. The ideal candidate will play a key role in LR team and contribute to the project overall.

The role
- To conduct relevant activities and provide advice for service delivery within own area of experience, adhering to budget constraints and contractual requirements.
- To produce the deliverable to the agreed schedule, budget and quality levels within an appropriate format and take responsibility to review and monitor other employee’s work as requested.
- To discuss and present the deliverable with the internal / external client and be able to suggest solutions as necessary.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
- To pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness.
- To assess or recommend the time and value of the work to be undertaken for an external client and to assist in identifying the most appropriate fee and cost structure.
- To mentor / coach other employees, as appropriate, to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
- To contribute to external client management; ensuring service delivery is continually improved through monitoring and acting on client feedback appropriately.
- Ensure the appropriate authorisations are gained and are kept up to date. This may involve Activity Monitoring.
- Undertake routine administration as required in line with current processes and procedures.
What you bring
- A degree or equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution recognized by Lloyd’s Register in a relevant engineering or physical science discipline (minimum two-year program), or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution with relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
- Membership in a relevant professional institution.
- Ideally Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, appropriate to the requirements of the role.
- A strong understanding of vessel new construction.
- Knowledge and understanding of the naval sector, including its operational and regulatory landscape.
- You either hold, or be eligible to obtain the relevant security clearances.
