Naval/Marine Technical Specialist

If you’ve proven you can manage engineering projects and people, this is a chance to work alongside some of the UK’s biggest naval engineering experts.

Part of a small, enthusiastic community of specialist marine surveyors and technical specialists, you’ll be learning from the very best in their field – an ideal chance to build on your existing marine knowledge.

About the job

You’ll join Lloyd’s Register’s Naval Centre of Expertise (NCOE) who play a vital role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of serving defence personnel, by providing assurance services and technical support to help keep the Navy’s warships and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships available for operations.

You’ll be the main point of contact for MOD clients and their defence contractors advising on and managing the delivery of our range of services that support fleet availability. Whether you’re advising on refits or upgrades, Classification, safety processes or industry standards, you’ll be the key point of contact for your clients, providing consistent technical and commercial leadership, as well as occasional training to MoD staff as they change roles.

We are happy for you to work flexibly but you’ll be expected to spend two days a week in our Bristol office, therefore an ideally located candidate will be within commutable distance. You will also be expected to visit our clients in the Bristol area as well as at centres of naval activity such as Portsmouth and Devonport.

What you can add

Provided you know your way around a ship from a marine or engineering perspective, we’re flexible about your experience. Maybe you’re working in defence/engineering following an engineering or science degree and looking to sharpen your marine focus. Or you could bring us valuable technical expertise gained at sea as an experienced engineer. It could also make an ideal move for a marine surveyor who wants to work for an organisation that’s guided by principles, not profits.

Ideally, you have or are working towards chartered/incorporated engineering status and you must be able to achieve UK SC security clearance.

It’s as much a people-focused role as it is an engineering one. As well as being a confident communicator, you’ll need to be able to think both practically and commercially to solve problems. We’re looking for someone who can apply existing and emerging technology and who will strive to keep improving things, both for the business and for our clients.

Job Responsibilities

  • Co-ordinate the delivery of services under the contracts with MOD for both RFA ships and warships.
  • Act as the main point of contact for the dealing with service queries from assigned MOD teams. Maintain an on-going review of LR Class Direct and internal databases and software as it affects Naval vessels.
  • Liaison with and provide technical advice to MOD clients and attending surveyors. Visits to ships and other MOD establishments to gain practical experience of naval ship surveying, conduct client relationship management and training.
  • Deliver custom training courses on LR's naval business and its application to MOD, naval and commercial audiences.
  • Assess/recommend the time/value of the work to be undertaken for an internal/external client within an agreed fee/cost structure and within the commercial aspects of the contract.
  • Assess and make recommendations on how services can be improved, and cost benefits obtained for both LR and clients.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation and industry standards.
  • Pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness
