Lloyd’s Register Canada Limited is part of the Lloyds Register Group, a premier independent classification society with global coverage.  We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified Electrical and Control Systems Specialist to join our experienced Technical Support Office in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  


Your duties will include:

  • Ability to perform assessments and provide specialist advice for service delivery, and research or development work within agreed parameters such as budget constraints and contractual requirements
  • To apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems and services
  • To coach other employees, as appropriate, and disseminate information to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application
  • To discuss/present the deliverable with internal and external clients and suggesting alternative solutions where appropriate
  • To conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards
  • To assist in service delivery improvement by communicating internal/external client feedback as appropriate
  • To pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintaining a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness


Key Skill requirements:

  • The suitable candidate will undertake design appraisal of electrical and control systems for marine vessels and floating structures such as oceangoing vessels, naval ships, patrol vessels, offshore support vessels, research vessels, tugboats, Yachts, etc. in support of Classification and Certification.
  • Must possess excellent knowledge of electrical distribution system design, control systems, electrical load analysis, coordination studies, Arc Flash hazard analysis, layout arrangements, component selection, Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA), Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and design integration.
  • Must possess excellent communication and leadership skills and working knowledge of Marine Regulations, Codes and Standards such as IMO, SOLAS, IEC, NEC, TP, IEEE, CFR, USCG, and other applicable Class Societies rules & Regulations.
  • The suitable candidate must be able to multitask and work within a fast-paced environment.
  • Good knowledge of the Marine Regulatory Regime, including the classification process and IMO conventions / Codes and Flag Administration Regulations.
  • Experience in a shipyard, marine consultancy or Classification Society in Electrical or Control Systems engineering/design is an asset.
  • Possess flexible attitude, effective interpersonal skills, strong analytical skills and can provide technical, commercial, and people leadership.
  • Proficiency in English Language commensurate with the work and have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess excellent computer skills.


You will have:

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent with previous work experience in the design of electrical and electronic control systems for the Marine industry.
  • Experience with software development activities including Software Conformity Assessment is a plus.
  • A member of a professional engineering organization working towards achieving Professional Engineer (P Eng), Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status.
  • Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work.
