Lloyd’s Register Canada Limited is part of the Lloyds Register Group, a premier independent classification society with global coverage.  We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified Senior Electrical Specialist - Design Appraisal to join our experienced Technical Support Office in Toronto area, Ontario, Canada.  


About the role

You’ll be required to undertake Plan Appraisal services relating to Classification, Certification and Type Approval electrical system in accordance with LR Classification Rules and Regulations as well as wider industry Codes and Standards. After the appraisal comes the technical advice. You’ll work with our global team, field surveyors, and clients to propose innovative solutions to problems and advise on the time and cost of work involved.


Your appraisals will result in insightful reports/certificates that will be of real worth to our clients. At the same time, you’ll stay focused on your own Continuous Professional Development, actively seeking out opportunities to enhance your expertise and keep your skills fully up to date.


Your duties will include:

  • Ability to perform complex assessments and provide specialist advice for service delivery, and research or development work within agreed parameters such as budget constraints and contractual requirements.
  • To apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems and services.
  • To coach other employees, as appropriate, and disseminate information to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
  • To discuss/present the deliverable with internal and external clients and suggesting alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • To conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  • To assist in service delivery improvement by communicating internal/external client feedback as appropriate.
  • To undertake project management where applicable including monitoring project progress and spend against budget and contract requirements.


Key Skill requirements:

  • Experience in the design of Ship Electrical and Control systems.
  • Worked with the following standards IEEE 45, TP127e and IEC 60092 and familiar with the classification rules used in the marine industry.
  • Extensive knowledge of Power Generation Systems (Main, Essential, Emergency including Hybrid systems); Energy Storage Systems (ESS), Power System Protection; Power Supply & Distribution Systems; Switching Equipment; Converting Equipment - Transformers, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs); Propulsion systems, Navigation and Maneuvering Systems; High Voltage and Low Voltage Systems; Switchgears and Control gear assemblies; rotating machines; switching equipment; Micro grid distribution system; PLC and Embedded Systems; Electrical equipment in hazardous areas.
  • Good knowledge of the Marine Regulatory Regime, including the classification process and IMO conventions / Codes and Flag Administration Regulations.
  • Experience in a shipyard, marine consultancy or Classification Society in Electrical or Control Systems engineering/design is an asset.
  • Possess flexible attitude, effective interpersonal skills, strong analytical skills and can provide technical, commercial, and people leadership.
  • Proficiency in English Language commensurate with the work and have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess excellent computer skills.


You will have:

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Electrical / Control engineering.
  • You possess or have the ability to obtain Controlled Goods and Secret security clearance.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution with Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation or eligible and working towards P.Eng status.
