  • Duties:
    • Performing hull structural design appraisal in accordance with Lloyd's Register's Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships, Special Service Crafts and Naval Ships in support of the Americas Region Technical Support Services based on authorizations received;
    • Performing hull structural design appraisal in accordance with IMO regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL) and Flag Administration regulations (principally Canada Shipping Act and Regulations and USCG Alternate Compliance Program) based on authorizations received;
    • Providing technical advice and guidance to TSO staff, LR field surveyors and clients on matters relating to LR Rule and to IMO and domestic regulations (typically Transport Canada and USCG requirements) in areas of technical expertise;
    • Providing cost estimates of appraisal work to be undertaken to the ATSO Quotations coordinator;
    • Discussing and presenting appraisal findings with clients and be able to suggest alternative solutions where appropriate;
    • Undertaking routine administration and conducting appraisal activities in accordance with current LR Group, Marine and ATSO processes, procedures, and making recommendations to improve service delivery; and
    • Assisting in project management functions associated with major conversions and/or new-buildings.
  • Education/work experience required for the job:
    • Master's degree in Naval Architecture from a tertiary organization recognized by Lloyd's Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science;
    • General knowledge of the marine regulatory regime, including the classification process and IMO conventions/codes and Flag Administration regulations is an asset;
    • Minimum of 10 years of work experience at a Classification Society in naval architecture or marine engineering design;
    • Strong critical and analytical skills;
    • Able to operate well in situations where information may be unclear but sound decisions are required;
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
    • The technical support aspect of the role will include trouble shooting and finding acceptable resolutions in dispute situations, therefore the ability to listen, accommodate and persuade whilst maintaining technical compliance is essential;
    • Good technical and commercial management skills and knowledge, e.g. project management, process management;
    • Commercially aware and able to manage projects within time and budget constraints;
    • Able to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of engineering problems;
    • Possesses effective interpersonal skills and can provide technical, commercial and people and team leadership;
    • Well-developed PC skills. Good working knowledge of MS Office and AutoCAD. Knowledge of specialised software (e.g. NAPA, Finite Element Analysis Package, 3D beam analysis) is desirable but not essential.
    • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
    • Ability to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding in the application of existing and emerging technology.
