What we're looking for
We are looking for an experienced marine professional with extensive knowledge of new construction survey activities, propulsion systems, and alternative fuels to join our Survey Policy team as Principal Specialist – Decarbonisation. This role offers a great opportunity for a professional who brings practical survey experience and technical knowledge to guide the development and application of survey requirements for new decarbonization technologies worldwide in the maritime sector..
You will act as a trusted link between operational survey teams and technical governance, helping to shape survey regulations, procedures, and digital tools that support the safe adoption of alternative fuels such as LNG, LPG, ammonia, and other emerging technologies. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of classification frameworks, survey processes, and the practical realities of ship construction and inspection.

The role
- Provide specialist expertise in alternative fuels and decarbonisation technologies to support the development and governance of LR's survey policies and technical reference materials.
- Monitor industry developments, emerging technologies, and competitor activities to identify opportunities that strengthen Lloyd's Register's technical leadership.
- Manage projects supporting the Technical Directorate technology plan, ensuring survey documentation, procedures, and digital tools remain aligned with evolving industry requirements.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of Digital Workbench, MAST, and other digital platforms supporting survey delivery
- Serve as the main technical contact for surveyors and other internal and external partners by collecting operational input and offering clear guidance.ce.
- Translate practical survey experience into robust policies, procedures, and technical solutions that support safe and consistent implementation worldwide.
- Work collaboratively across Technical Directorate, Fleet Services, Product teams, and Survey Policy to ensure consistent application of technical requirements.
- Deliver technical training, presentations, and knowledge-sharing sessions for both internal and external audiences.
- Represent Lloyd's Register in industry forums, technical committees, and external organisations, supporting LR's technical influence strategy.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by analysing customer and surveyor feedback and recommending enhancements to processes, systems, and technical documentation.
- Mentor and coach colleagues, promoting knowledge sharing and technical excellence across the organisation.
- Maintain ongoing professional development and remain current with advances in decarbonisation technologies, classification requirements, and regulatory frameworks.
- Support the Global Head of Technology – Survey and Inspection with additional strategic initiatives as required.
What you bring
- Extensive experience in marine engineering, classification, or survey activities, particularly within new construction
- Solid practical knowledge of propulsion systems and alternative fuels, including LNG, LPG, ammonia, and emerging decarbonisation technologies.
- Experience applying classification rules, survey requirements, and international regulatory frameworks within operational environments.
- Working knowledge of Lloyd's Register systems and digital platforms, including Digital Workbench and MAS
- Solid knowledge of Class, IACS, and IMO regulatory frameworks.rks.
- Experience supporting New Construction projects, First Entry processes, Alternative Fuels, and Risk-Based Certification (RBC) application
- Demonstrated skill in analyzing issues and developing practical technical solutions from operational challenges.on
- Advanced stakeholder management and communication capabilities, supported by effective coordination with global technical teams.ams.
- Experience delivering technical presentations, training, and mentoring colleagues.
- Knowledge of project management principles and experience managing technical projects and budgets.
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Physical Sciences, or another relevant engineering discipline, or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution with relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship's officer.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status.
- Professional English language proficiency.
