What we’re looking for
We are seeking a Lead Specialist to join our Technical Directorate. The ideal candidate should possess extensive expertise in technical assurance for complex autonomy to provide valuable support and guidance for the development of Classification Rules concerning Marine and Offshore applications of autonomy. Although the team is located at the Southampton Global Technology Centre in the UK, the chosen candidate has the option to work in hybrid work environment from a different location.
As a Lead Specialist in complex autonomy, you will take charge of spearheading LR's efforts to enhance our capability in delivering expert technical advice that meets our customers' expectations. Your responsibilities will primarily revolve around guiding the development of efficient verification and validation approaches across our Rules and assurance products.

The role
- Utilize technical expertise to assess and provide assurance for the functional applications of autonomy on our client's assets. This includes scaling from complex automation in uncertain environments to fully autonomous decision-making in complex environments, such as onshore infrastructure like remote control centers.
- Collaborate with colleagues from systems engineering, cyber security, and human-factors disciplines to address dependability and ensure human wellbeing and safety are not compromised when implementing autonomous technologies.
- Identify client needs and review their requirements to plan and develop appropriate services related to autonomy.
- Participate in technical sales calls and meetings to recommend suitable assurance services for customers' complex automation, digitalization, and autonomy strategies. Provide scoping assistance for projects.
- Represent LR as a subject matter expert in various stakeholder forums and deliver presentations.
- Take personal ownership of identifying and continuously seeking improvements to the service delivery and the development of the classification framework.
- Maintain Continuous Professional Development and stay updated with a broad range of discipline knowledge and awareness.
- Assist in building a collaborative team and enhancing LR's autonomous system capability globally through upskilling initiatives.
What you bring
- A demonstrated understanding of applications of autonomy in a complex safety-critical environment, acquired through practical experience and/or training.
- Familiarity with regulatory and standardized assurance approaches used to verify and validate the safety and security of assets operating in the Ocean Economy.
- A degree or equivalent experience recognized by Lloyd's Register in a relevant engineering discipline, preferably in computer science, control engineering, electrical engineering, or systems engineering.
- Hands-on experience and practical skills in working with sensors and systems for machinery monitoring and autonomous navigation.
- Knowledge of artificial intelligence concepts and terminology.
- A strong willingness to learn from related engineering fields to develop a comprehensive understanding of maritime operations within a systems and human factors context.
- Working towards or having attained chartered engineer status.
- Experience with Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships would be considered advantageous.
- Knowledge of risk management for artificial intelligence (e.g., ISO/IEC 23894) and artificial intelligence management systems would be considered beneficial.
- An understanding of ethical and societal concerns related to artificial intelligence would be considered beneficial.
- To be available to travel internationally.
