Harmonisation Intern

3 months internship

Background

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) was founded in 1997 and sets the Standard for sustainably sourced seafood. Since foundation, the MSC has expanded globally. Today there are around 300 fisheries in the certification programme and an increasing number of MSC fishers are overlapping (fisheries requiring assessment of some or all of the same aspects of the Standard due to similarities in fishing operation).

Overlapping fisheries are assessed individually and many overlapping fisheries receive different scores, despite being similar. This undermines the credibility of the Standard and since 2014 the MSC requires Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) to harmonise scores between overlapping fisheries to deliver consistent results. To harmonise CABs need to identify overlapping fisheries, have access to all associated scores awarded and additional components such as by-catch species and habitats impacted. This presents CABs with a huge amount of data to analyse with every new assessment and surveillance audit.

This project:

(1) resolves the challenges allied to harmonisation by developing a tool by which CABs can extract information, including associated scores, previously buried in Public Certification Reports (PCRs) and annual surveillance reports;

(2) demonstrates the subsequent and prevalent inconsistencies in scoring between overlapping fisheries.

A harmonisation tool will provide significant benefits to Lloyd’s Register, as an accredited CAB, the MSC and Accreditation Bodies. Additional observations and suggestions made during this project around clarity and understanding of the Standard may be of interest to the MSC in reinforcing the sustainability goals the MSC aims to achieve.

You will:

  1. Update the current harmonisation tool developed by LR in 2018
  2. Align key data points with the MSC ecert output
  3. Work with the LR Innovation and Technology team to develop an online, user-friendly search tool
  4. Update the harmonisation tool features based on feedback and input from the MSC as needed
