Role Summary:

As a  Machinery Surveyor, you wil be a member of our knowledgeable team in Glasgow and will have the chance to use your surveying skills on a high-profile, long-term maritime construction project – one that is projected to last more than a decade. You will collaborate with shipyards to deliver a series of Frigates that are safe, capable and attractive to navies around the world – steel fabrication has already begun and the launch of the first ship is expected later this year.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Apply the in depth knowledge of marine structures, mechanical and electrical control to identify problems and give guidance on Marine New Construction and Commissioning topics.
  • Understand the naval design process, and collaborate with the team to support the in build supervision and the in-service activities on naval ships around the world.
  • Utilise previous Surveying experience and operate as an expert advising on challenges and improvement opportunities in processes and methodology.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts, identify issues and research on possible alternatives and and disseminate this knowledge to the wider team.
  • Lead on all electro-technical activities of the build, ensuring construction adheres to the LR Naval Ship Rules, the ANEP77 Edition F Naval Ship Code as well as other contractual requirements.
  • Drive and implement a safety strategy, patrol and audit activities
  • Support the Project Manager in raising possible risks and advising on key technical challenges
  • Build good working relationships internally and externally with key contacts and suppliers.
  • Operate as strategic and lateral thinker with ability to translate a wider strategy into clear goals, priorities and expectations for the project team.
  • Act as an all-round communicator engaging with stakeholders and encouraging positive, open and two-way discussion, fully involving others in decisions and ideas.
  • Work in accordance with professional codes of conduct and the LR Code of Ethics in IMS01.

 

Key Health & Safety Responsibilities:

 

  • Assess the risks and work in a safe manner at all times, robustly implementing health and safety rules, instructions and systems and refuse to undertake work that compromises your safety or health.
  • Report in a timely manner all incidents including near miss and safety observations (NMSO), accidents and injuries and raise any health and safety concerns with your line manager.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of marine engineering or naval architecture.
  • Previous relevant Marine New Construction and Commissioning experience and exposure to collaborating with Shipyards advising on issues.
  • Ability to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology.
  • Ability to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems and services.
  • Ability to act both independently and as part of a team seting priorities and making decisions, taking account of commercial considerations and navigating through a range of issues to define a clear way forward.

 

Preferred but not Required:

  • Previous onboard experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience in the defence sector would be considered an advantage.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Working towards or achieving charted or incorporated engineering status.

  • Has a drive for results, solution focused thinking and is keen to take accountability and ownership for delivering customer needs.
  • Demonstrates initiative and proactiveness and has flexibility adjusting your approach when necessary.
  • Has good planning and process management skills (scopes the length and difficulty of tasks; sets objectives and goals; breaks down work into process steps)
  • Has perseverance in the face of obstacles
  • Displays a team spirit, particularly in a multicultural environment and ability to work both independently and as part of a team with colleagues in person and around the world.
  • Excellent professional people skills to lead, motivate, coach team members to improve team and organizational performance across the area of business.
