Naval New Construction Manager

Location:  Glasgow

 

What we’re looking for 

As part of this role you will lead and manage the operations of the UK&I naval new construction business, towards meeting specific business/commercial objectives and deliverables. You will also develop the business to help improve Lloyd’s Register’s competitive position in the sector and act as the external and internal figurehead of the UK&I naval new construction business in line with policy frameworks.

Additionally, you will provide technical and project management guidance to other naval new construction projects globally and contribute to the overall global naval strategy.

The role

  • Develop, maintain and deliver a UK&I naval new construction business strategy in line with the vision for the business, while supporting and integrating with a global naval segment strategy.
  • Working with a wide group of cross-functional stakeholders including marketing, commercial, finance, and operations, develop, deliver and maintain a UK&I naval new construction business plan to achieve the objectives of the naval new construction business strategy with an outlook of 1, 3 and 5 years.
  • To monitor developments in the industry and Lloyd’s Register’s competitive positioning within the naval new construction business and ensure the information is communicated to senior managers to help with the formulation of business/commercial strategies and determination of the costing structure.
  • To lead, manage and develop the UK&I naval new construction teams to maintain an effective and competitive service.  This includes recruitment, performance management and training / development.
  • To lead, prepare and manage UK&I naval new construction quotes for both plan appraisal and site supervision project contracts.
  • To support and provide guidance for global naval new construction and supply chain projects with technical queries and assistance in preparing quotes for both plan appraisal and site supervision project contracts.
  • To engage and support the naval supply chain by answering technical queries and preparing and managing quotes for plan approval, survey and the attendance during build, as required.
  • Overall responsibility for managing and achieving budgetary requirements of all UK&I naval new construction projects, taking into account commercial and contractual requirements pertinent to delivery. Identifying opportunities for growth in revenue on existing projects.
  • Supporting the implementation of change and developments within the sub-function to meet future business demands to improve Lloyd’s Register’s competitive position and develop selling point capabilities.
  • Responsible for ensuring that LRs systems, processes and procedures are effective, support the naval business and efficient to meet business/commercial requirements for both internal and external clients
  • Supporting the UK&I naval business to ensure it is aware of and complies with the necessary external requirements for the delivery of government business including: regulatory, security, export control, cyber, commercial.
  • Deal with business queries and build relationships with internal and external clients within the Area, as appropriate, to resolve service problems and build the business.
  • To mentor/coach team members, as appropriate, to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
  • Liaise with other business areas/offices to ensure consistency in development and delivery of naval new construction  to internal and external clients through the functional support delivered by the Naval Centre of Expertise.
  • To provide naval new construction training to internal and external clients

 

What you bring 

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work.
  • Demonstrable and practiced understanding of the Project Management process, gained through experience and training.
  • Previous experience of budget monitoring and contract negotiations
  • Resident in the UK and eligible for UK Security Check (SC) clearance
  • Experience of successfully managing a team
  • Some experience of business planning and influencing future strategies
  • Preferred thorough understanding of the naval market & marine environment to manage commercial focus & find new business
  • Ability to communicate effectively at different levels within organisations and to influence successfully and openly at all levels – both inside our organisation and outside in the business, particularly with senior government & military figures
  • Ability and understanding to participate, communicate, positively contribute and add value in naval technical discussions with clients and LR colleagues alike
  • Preferred experience of service provision to the UK Ministry of Defence
  • Preferred experience of commercial or naval account management at senior level
