Position Type:Employee Regular

This is a chance to use your surveying skills on a high-profile, long-term maritime construction project – one that’s projected to last more than a decade. You’ll be part of an expert team within a unique independent organisation that’s built a 250-year reputation throughout the maritime world.

Background

Lloyd’s Register has delivered design appraisal and survey for new defence construction projects the world over, including: QEC Aircraft carriers, LSD(A), MARS, RCB2, Type 45, LPD, LPH and AO to naval and merchant ship rules. Our customers rely on us for a tailored approach to classification approach that identifies issues early and reduces risk.

Now, we’re pleased to be working with BAE Systems and the MoD Client team in their Govan and Scotstoun shipyards to deliver a series of eight T26 Frigates that are safe, capable and attractive to navies around the world. It’s a twelve-year project – steel fabrication has already begun and the launch of the first ship is expected later this year.

About the role

As electro-technical surveyor, you’ll be part of our five-strong on-site team.  This is a complex engineering project that will set new standards so, naturally, there will be challenges and areas outside your experience.

The key here is that you’re happy researching and investigating problems, supported by Lloyd’s Register’s subject matter experts, and then succinctly disseminating this knowledge to the wider team. If you want to expand your technical knowledge – and help others to do the same – this will be a hugely satisfying role.

Specifically, your remit includes:

  • Leading on all electro-technical activities of the build, making sure construction adheres to the LR Naval Ship Rules, the ANEP77 Edition F Naval Ship Code as well as other contractual requirements.
  • Implementing a safety strategy, patrol and audit activities
  • Supporting the Project Manager e.g. by anticipating, leading and advising on key technical challenges
  • Cultivating good working relationships between LR and key contacts in BAE Systems, the MoD and suppliers.

What you can add

You’re an experienced engineer with (or working towards) chartered status. You almost certainly have marine new construction experience – but not necessarily in the defence sector, so it could be a chance to broaden your CV in that direction. If you’re not a UK national or UK resident, that’s fine, as long as you can clear UK security clearance.

Beyond that, it’s your soft skills that will help you succeed. You’re a strategic and lateral thinker – someone who can translate a wider strategy into clear goals, priorities and expectations for the project team. You’ve shown you can make decisions and set priorities, taking account of commercial considerations and navigating through a range of issues to define a clear way forward.

Clearly, you need to be a proven all-round communicator. You know how to encourage positive, open and two-way discussion, fully involving others in decisions and ideas – and you’re enthusiastic about sharing knowledge and experience with others.

Why join us?

  • Be part of an independent organisation with a strong purpose – one that is guided by principles, not just profit. We’ve gained a strong reputation for doing the right thing, even if it means making difficult decisions – so you can work with consistently high standards and professional integrity.
  • You will join a reshaped Lloyd's Register, thats sharpened its focus on the global maritime sector. Ours is an agile, open culture where you can contribute your ideas to help shape new ways of working.
  • You'll be part of our Glasgow office but supported by our Naval Centre of Expertise - an established world-leading naval classification. Spread across the UK, the team deeply understands the naval design process, supporting it in build supervision and in-service activities on naval ships around the world.
  • A competitive salary will be offered.
  • Big company benefits including 25 days’ holiday, private health cover and generous contributory pension scheme.
  • The scale of our business and depth of our expertise creates experiences you simply won’t find anywhere else. With a flat, fluid structure, we encourage our people to pursue new interests and stretch their skills. Beyond this role, there’s a world of opportunity to develop your career here.
