We are seeking a leader (Principal Surveyor/Specialist) to oversee the Americas regional FSD-IS team, ensuring swift, clear, and consistent classification decisions and guidance.
A professional committed to maintaining strong governance in line with LR’s procedures while driving continuous improvement initiatives. An expert with specialized knowledge and experience in their discipline, serving as a key member of the Classification Executive, contributing to strategic decision-making. A technical specialist providing expert support to Commercial, GTCC, and Operations management.

The role
- You will become a voting member of LRs Classification Executive after suitable induction period , be responsible for decisions regarding postponements of surveys, lay-up and reactivation, confirmation of class, and enhanced survey under the authority of the Classification Committee as defined in FSDs procedures. Appropriately managing LRs technical risk.
- Monitor the team's caseload globally, own caseload, and adherence to classification procedures to ensure that defined standards and performance measures are upheld and ensure corrective procedures are enacted and communicated where required
- Monitor industry and competitor developments within the discipline, actively recommending areas for future research and development to enhance Lloyd’s Register’s competitive position.
- Lead projects for the development and improvement of global marine processes for the classification of vessels in accordance with LR and FSD strategy. Contribute to improving Lloyd’s Register’s competitive position through the accuracy, consistency, and speed of our response.
- Provide specialist support/advice within a discipline/area to internal/external clients.
- Audit and endorse survey reports issued globally, and ensure corrective action is implemented at the corporate level as applicable
- Pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
- Undertake administration as required in line with current processes and procedures.
- To work in accordance with professional codes of conduct and the LR Code of Ethics in IMS01.
- Mentor/coach other employees to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
What you bring
- A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organization recognized by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years program) or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
- Knowledge of marine classification and statutory certification surveys commensurate with practical experience of a wide variety of ship types gained by prior employment as a Lead Surveyor.
- Knowledge and experience in many asset types and standards including: Tanker, Bulk, GAS, PaX, floating offshore assets, Linkspans, Tugs, Naval ships, Yachts, Boats, and diving systems or submersibles.
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of marine classification processes and procedures.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
You are someone who:
- Has strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Brings demonstrable understanding of the Project Management process gained through experience and training.
- Holds high Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work.
- Having proficiency in the Spanish Language; would be an added advantage.
