Lloyd’s Register North America, Inc. is part of the Lloyds Register Group, a premier independent classification society with global coverage.  We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified Process Safety Specialist to join our experienced Americas Technical Support Office in Houston, TX, USA. 


Your duties will include:

  • To provide Process Safety technical support to personnel in Classification Services, Marine & Offshore business, and equipment manufacturers. This includes undertaking design appraisal work to ensure compliance with the relevant Rules, Regulations, Codes and Standards.
  • To perform assessments of Process Safety Engineering design and provide specialist advice for service delivery, and research or development work within agreed parameters such as budget constraints and contractual requirements.
  • To apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods with regards to process safety engineering design and assessments.
  • To coach other employees, as appropriate, and disseminate information to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
  • To discuss/present the deliverables with internal and external clients and suggest alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • To conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  • To assist in service delivery improvement by communicating internal / external client feedbacks as appropriate.
  • To pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge, and awareness.
  • To make suggestions to improve service delivery effectiveness through changes to processes or work scope such that it leads to a reduction in appraisal effort (where applicable).
  • To undertake Project Coordinator / Project Engineer roles where requested.


Key Skill requirements:

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent with minimum of five (5) years previous work experience in the Process Engineering design in marine, oil and gas, refinery, petrochemical, or similar industries.
  • Detailed working knowledge of Process Engineering design, Process and Utility systems integration and safeguarding core skills, and engineering principles applied to Process Safety design.
  • Familiarity with the respective/related Codes & Standards and Rules & Regulations including Lloyd’s Register Classification Rules, API Standards and RPs, ISO Standards, Regulatory/Verification Regimes, CSA Codes, IMO references incl. IGC, SOLAS, MODU, MARPOL,  and other Codes and Standards commonly used in the Marine and Offshore industries.
  • Familiarity with Onshore/Offshore facilities (fixed/floating installations) and oil & gas and energy processes and plants including crude oil production and treatment, gas production and treatment, LNG process and production units, floating units such as FLNG and FPSO, process plant utility and auxiliary systems.
  • Working knowledge of Process Engineering typical design deliverable documents.
  • Knowledge and experience of Process Safety Risk Assessment studies and Risk Management techniques, Overpressure Protection and Flare/Vent systems design, Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems design concepts, Hazardous Area Classification, and familiarity with fire & technical safety engineering aspects.
  • Working experience of different Process Engineering software tools including Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Flare System Analyzer, and PHAST.
  • A member of a professional engineering organization with P.E., CEng., or IEng status or working towards achieving these qualifications.
  • Flexible attitude, team player, with good written and verbal communication skills, and willing to undertake coordination roles in projects as required.
  • Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work.
  • Preferable: Any previous experience of gas carriers, windfarms substations, ballast-water treatment systems, and HVAC systems will be a plus.
