Lead Technical Specialist, Risk Assessment & Alternative Fuels
Lloyd’s Register
Location: Global (This role can be based anywhere)
What we're looking for
A vacancy exists in our Technical Directorate (TD) for a Lead Technical Specialist in Risk Assessment and Alternative Fuels. The primary focus is to provide support and guidance to plan appraisal engineers, surveyors, industry, and national administrations (flags) concerned with retrofitting vessels to use alternative fuels. In this respect, the role is to help achieve an appropriate level of safety-risk whilst meeting decarbonisation aims.
The role presents an opportunity to pro-actively influence the safety of alternative fuel designs: through championing LR’s Risk Based Certification (RBC) process; application of risk assessment to support inherently safer design, meaningful protection, and safety justifications; and development or input to internal and external rules, requirements and guidance.
What we offer you
- Competitive Salary
- Bonus
- Hybrid working
- The opportunity to work for an organization that has a strong sense of purpose is values-driven, and helps colleagues to develop professionally and personally through our range of people development programs
The role
The Specialist will report to the Global Head of Technology (GHoT) for Risk Management, and work with the Lead Technical Specialist for Risk Assessment & RBC, and other colleagues in Technical Directorate. Importantly, the Specialist will also work closely with plan appraisal engineers and surveyors on key retrofit projects.
Although the GHoT and Lead for RBC are both UK based, this role is open to those located outside the UK (e.g. located close to ship building and ship design centres in Asia or Europe)
Key Responsibilities
- Advise colleagues, industry and regulators on safety-risk and the RBC requirements in retrofitting vessels to use alternative fuels.
- Support plan appraisal engineers, surveyors and clients on key retrofit projects with the aim of ensuring an appropriate level of safety-risk whilst meeting decarbonisation aims.
- Pro-actively support plan appraisal engineers, surveyors and clients to close-out actions (from to RBC process) to the satisfaction of LR, flag and clients.
- Determine and/or advise on appropriate risk assessment approaches to meet RBC.
- Assist with development and update of Rules and guidance on alternative fuels, risk assessment and retrofits.
What you bring
- A degree or equivalent recognised by LR within a relevant field of engineering (minimum of three years’ programme) and membership of an appropriate professional institution (preferably with chartered engineering status). In addition, you will need knowledge of alternative fuels, retrofits, engineering systems/controls, and extensive risk assessment experience, including its application within the maritime, offshore and/or process sectors.
- Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work is also required, together with good communication skills. Importantly, the successful candidate will have the desire to help colleagues and industry attain appropriate levels of safety-risk and meet the goal of decarbonisation in the maritime sector.
