The Lloyd’s Register Foundation, Heritage & Education Centre is a public-facing library and archive holding material concerning over 250 years of marine and engineering science and history. The Centre is a part of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation and is focused on enhancing public education and research in a number of areas, from maritime history to STEM disciplines.


The Centre are also the custodians of Lloyd’s Register’s vast archive. With materials dating back to the 1830s, the archive holds over 1.25 million ship plans and survey reports, the historic photograph collection, Lloyd’s Register corporate history documents and much more.


The diversity of the Centre’s library and archive offer an invaluable resource to researchers from a variety of disciplines, including maritime, business, engineering, genealogy and linguistics.


The Archive Assistant opportunity is a fixed term contract for 12 months

  • Work flexibly to compile a descriptive box level inventory with accurate location details in either Excel or within an Archive Management System.
  • Keep up-to-date records of ongoing progress for monitoring purposes.
  • Liaise with external suppliers and stakeholders to organise continuing box transfers and deliveries.
  • Sort, label and re-package boxes where necessary, in addition to documenting them for the inventory.
  • Assist with the tracking, loading and monitoring of boxes being relocated from Woolwich Arsenal back to 71 Fenchurch Street.
  • Recognise and flag materials that require conservation.
  • Conduct all activities in line with internal procedures, contractual requirements and departmental convention.
  • Report to the Archivist on progress and stick to predetermined targets.
  • Assess the risks and work in a safe manner at all times, robustly implementing health and safety rules, instructions and systems and refuse to undertake work that compromises your safety or health.



  • Applicants should have a relevant degree or in an historically based subject.
  • Experience of creating/compiling inventories or box lists in a professional museum/archive/library environment using Excel and/or a purpose-built Archive Management System is desirable.
  • Experience of facilitating and assisting with professional museum/archive/library relocations, e.g. monitoring item transfers, progress reporting, labelling, and general logistical support.
  • Experience with collection handling and packing within a professional museum/archive/library collection environment.
  • Understanding of data protection legislation and GDPR in an archive setting.
  • An interest in archival science would be beneficial.
  • Demonstrates a high level of understanding of archives and the heritage industry, as well as awareness of current issues.
  • Excellent understanding of the key information required in order to create an accurate box level entry and the reasons for needing that information.
