Role purpose:

The Maritime Decarbonisation hub is a LR Foundation funded programme with the purpose to accelerate the decarbonisation of the maritime sector through providing evidence based insight to enable informed decision making and building partnerships to unlock barriers in transition pathways to innovate and demonstrate routes to scale. The Hub produces research, evidence -based insight for stakeholders in the maritime ecosystem including government and finance, covering sustainability in everything from energy sources to onboard low carbon technologies.


The Risk Consultant will be accountable for ensuring delivery of projects related to energy systems in shipping including the logistical and bunkering operations as directed by the program in the Maritime Decarbonisation Hub.

The ideal candidate will be customer focused and commercially astute, display strength in both creative and analytical tasks, and be a self-starter who enjoys working cross-functionally to drive change and execution. S/he must excel in working as part of a multi-functional virtual team to deliver on business objectives.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Support the development of the decarbonisation hub research and product roadmap together with the Programme Team to ensure the Hub delivers against its ambition and addresses the market challenges to enable the energy transition to zero.
  • Support Hub programmes and activities by providing subject matter expertise to demonstrate future energy and technology solutions with regards to cost, environmental benefits, safety and technical feasibility.
  • Maintain the Marine Solution Readiness Level framework for low-zero carbon energy sources and establish the evidence base to provide a comprehensive and comparative approach of the potential solutions from a technology, investment and community perspective
  • Establish and drive projects to identify safety issues that can arise by the adoption of new fuels and technologies, both in collaboration with customers, partners and across the LR Group.
  • Contribute to projects and programmes to ensure consistency in the use of data and evidence related to the Marine product framework

  • Coordinate and run hazard identification workshops with multiple stakeholders
  • Develop and work on Qualitative Risk Assessments with multiple stakeholders


Key skills and experience:


  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution (eg. IMechE, IChemE, IMarEST)
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Demonstrable understanding and application of the Project Management processes, gained through experience and training. 
  • Some experience of business planning and interpreting future strategies
  • Good knowledge of financial and budgetary planning, able to track and report on financial information
  • Highly competent and recognised in the application of risk-assessment techniques and the ability to mentor and coach others in their application
  • Experienced facilitator of risk-assessment forums such as multidisciplinary HAZID studies 
  • Experience managing one's own time and balancing many different projects simultaneously. 
  • Experience in Process Safety with Hydrogen and Ammonia
