The Lloyd’s Register Foundation, Heritage & Education is a public-facing library and archive holding material concerning over 250 years of marine and engineering science and history. The Centre is a part of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation and is focused on enhancing public education and research in a number of areas, from maritime history to STEM disciplines.

Based at 71 Fenchurch Street London, the Centre’s library is open from Monday to Friday. Visitors to the Centre can access our unique library of over 59,000 items – all for free. Resources in the library include a complete collection of the Lloyd’s Register of Ships and Yachts, wreck books and staff journals.


The Digital Archivist opportunity is a fixed term contract for 3 years 


Your duties will include

  • Will work to develop and ensure the long term digital preservation, organisation, distribution and retrieval of digitised materials.
  • Manage internal digitisation of printed material sharing of digitised materials for external enquiries
  • Work with Lloyd’s Register Group enquiries and preservation of born digital Lloyd’s Register Group materials and data
  • Working with digitisation company and website development team in the presentation and hosting of digitised materials
  • Responsible for the preservation of crowdsourcing activities and data on the HEC website
  • Ensuring that digitisation standards are adhered to
  • Will ensure the accessibility and readability of archived digital formats
  • Will manage the consolidation of current databases maintained by HEC, in collaboration with the Digital Engagement Manager
  • Lead digitisation workshops in collaboration with the Education and Outreach team
  • Responsible for researching and uploading content for the HEC website
  • Provide materials needed for digital promotion (exhibitions, interactive screens, PowerPoints etc.).
  • Support wider HEC team as needed


To be considered

  • The applicant must have a degree in History or related subject as well as a genuine interest in preserving records for posterity
  • Awareness of GDPR protocols and digital preservation standards
  • Good communication skills and the ability to interact with a wide range of users
  • Excellent research and writing skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Experience in Microsoft office programs, social media platforms, databases, website CMS, Google analytics
  • The ability to anticipate and respond to changing needs and digital media
  • Flexible approach to adjust the role as the position develops
