Lloyd’s Register has embarked on a strategy for rapid product and service innovation in Industry 4.0 through the application of innovative Data and Digital technologies, especially but not uniquely for the Marine & Offshore sectors. This is being developed by the Digital Innovation function in collaboration with business streams and clients.

 

We are now recruiting a Senior Data Scientist to be based in our London office. Reporting to the VP - Digital Innovation, the primary responsibility of the role will be to provide specialist knowledge and implementation of solutions based on data science, analytics, machine learning and big data, from understanding and evaluating the data to ingestion and storage, data cleaning and conversion, and development of algorithms, through to validation and presentation.

 

As Senior Data Scientist, you will be working with domain experts, both internal and external, and with our technology partners and clients, to define and implement solutions for real world problems in an industrial and commercial context. A keen analytical mind with a clear vision of the art of the possible will be useful. Strong interpersonal skills will be necessary and a positive attitude and passion for technology and its application to LR’s business streams will be required.

 

What will I be doing?

 

•    Work closely with internal stakeholders in the identification of client business problems that could benefit from data science

•    Investigate client business or operational issues and propose cost-effective solutions within your knowledge domain. Solutions will take into account current technology trends and solutions.

•    Develop data-driven analytics and models, including in areas such as maintenance, risk and safety in relation to people, critical assets and infrastructure.

•    Prototype client solutions and collect inputs and feedback from intended users and stakeholders to iterate and improve the algorithms.

•    Work with LR’s digital products team to develop globally scalable and sustainable analytics processes in support of new products and services.

•    Work with technology partners to expand LR’s technology and delivery capabilities.

•    Lead best practices in data science and transfer knowledge to non-data specialists within the organisation.


What are we looking for?

 

Essential:
•    BSc or MSc qualification in data science, or recognised equivalent.

•    At least 3 years of relevant professional experience and demonstrable track record in applying machine learning and big data algorithms in developing solutions to real-world business problems.

•    Skills in mainstream (open source and commercial) data science tools, technology stacks and languages such as Hadoop, Spark, R, Python, and ideally cloud computing infrastructure (e.g. Azure, AWS).

•    Takes a hands-on approach to personally deliver data science projects – the role requires algorithm coding and model development as a key deliverable, working with internal and client stakeholders as part of a fast-paced development team.

•    Able to efficiently manage time, organised and can multi-task.

•    Agile experience or mindset, with direct experience in rapid application development of tools and methodologies.

•    Self-starter. Enthusiastic, flexible and results orientated approach with a ‘can do’ attitude.

 

Desirable:
•    Possess skills in usex and advanced visualisation, using both open source tools and mainstream commercial packages.

•    Experience of operating in a client facing context.

•    Experience in use of NLP for predictive and root cause analytics

•    Able to define and supervise work of other data scientists (internal and external) 

•    A robust analytical skill-set, curiosity and a penchant to think the impossible.
