Lloyd’s Register is looking for ambitious Senior Software Testers to join our growing testing team that can ideally be location in either in Southampton, London or Aberdeen.

The Senior Software Tester for Marine has responsibility for planning and executing software testing for LR’s Digital Products Marine software. The Tester will initially be focussed on one product, but the responsibilities may vary from time to time. The tester will ensure that Marine software meets defined software quality targets, using structured and repeatable software processes aligned to Digital Products methodologies.

Testing against our Marine software will require an absorption of expertise from our subject matter experts to build and execute the appropriate level of testing. Our software covers a range of uses, from the initial design to the successful operation of vessels and all things maritime.

You will possess the testing experience, enthusiasm, and drive to form part of a dynamic team within our Digital Products division. You need to be willing to embrace challenges and contribute to a range of projects.

The ideal candidate would have strong software testing and naval architecture experience, but strong candidates with either will be considered.

You will

  • Drive and execute testing efforts for a range of marine applications, including legacy desktop and modern web applications. The tester may work on multiple software products, including ShipRight (ship design assessment), SeaSafe (ship loading/stability) and RulesCalc software (validation against LR ship classification rules).
  • Work closely with stakeholders (product owners, developers, expert users, and testers) to improve Quality Assurance processes throughout the Software Development Lifecycle. Collaborate with testers across LR’s Digital Product team to establish and implement best practices for Marine software.
  • Participate in Agile development activities, attending daily stand-ups, sprint planning and sprint review meetings. Engage with distributed development teams, with many colleagues working in other parts of the world.
  • Use in-depth analysis of functional and non-functional specifications to determine test requirements for environment, data, resources, and tools.
  • Carry out manual and automated testing of active development projects, software patches and major releases. Design and execute manual test plans and analyse and report test results to stakeholders.
  • Provide QA Leads and Project Managers with time estimates and deliver to these agreed timescales. Present reports on projects, arrange and lead meetings and test coverage reviews.
  • Perform end-to-end workflow tests to ensure engineering calculation results match an agreed baseline, identifying regression risks and discrepancies. Log and track defects as necessary.
  • Capture evidence of exploratory testing performed by Subject Matter Exports, to build a full picture of testing efforts across marine software products.
  • Provide mentorship and assistance to colleagues on any aspect of test planning, execution, and automation.

To be considered

  • Possession of a degree in Computer Science, Physical Sciences or a relevant numerical/engineering subject.
  • Respected and proven experience of 5 or more years software testing in a commercial environment. A marine, energy, petrophysical or geological background would be an advantage, but not essential.
  • Excellent knowledge of software testing and its role within software development. Ability to deal with testing of complex workflows in desktop and/or cloud-based applications (not just standard E-commerce website testing).
  • A desire to progress and positively influence and change software development practices to improve quality.
  • Strong technical testing ability with a willingness and capability to coach and mentor junior team members on best testing practices.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps and Azure Test Plans, or other bug tracking and test case management software, would be a distinct advantage.
  • Knowledge of software automation tools and techniques for a range of software products, including web-based and desktop-based systems, would be an advantage.
  • Experience with BDD, Gherkin or other automation frameworks would be an advantage.
  • ISTQB Intermediate level or equivalent certification would be an advantage.
  • Experience with Python, C++, C# or Fortran would be an advantage
