Role purpose:

To assess the design / production / in service aspects of engineering assets, using procedures, experience and knowledge appropriate for complex/demanding situations. The role may also include managing projects.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. To conduct relevant activities and provide advice for service delivery within own area of experience, adhering to budget constraints and contractual requirements
  2. To produce the deliverable within the agreed parameters in a defined format to time, budget and to quality and take responsibility to review and monitor other employee’s work as necessary.
  3. To discuss and present the deliverable with the internal / external client and be able to suggest solutions where appropriate
  4. Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards
  5. To pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness
  6. To assess or recommend the time and value of the work to be undertaken for an external client, assisting in identifying the most appropriate fee and cost structure
  7. To give guidance to other employees, as appropriate, and disseminate information to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application
  8. To contribute to external client management; ensuring service delivery is continually improved through monitoring and acting on client feedback appropriately
  9. Ensure that the appropriate authorisations are gained and are kept up to date
  10. Undertake routine administration as required in line with current processes and procedures


Job Specific Responsibilities:

  • The execution of in-service contracts with RAN / Contractors from a technical and commercial perspective
  • Responsible for the planning and scheduling of surveys relating to the RAN Fleet based in Sydney
  • Maintaining an overview of the survey status of the remaining RAN fleet
  • Managing the relationships for in-service work with the relevant RAN departments and contractors
  • To provide technical support to the Australasia Naval Liaison Office as required
  • To support the co-ordination and delivery of consultancy projects, as requested
  • Support of the survey team in Sydney through surveys on the commercial fleet as required


Technical / Professional Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution
  • Working towards or achieving charted or incorporated engineering status
  • Experience as a Classification Society Field Surveyor and/or as a Marine Superintendent (or related) in positions of increasing responsibility. Direct naval experience or experience working with Naval and other government clients an asset
  • Thorough knowledge of the commercial regulatory regime, including Classification Society Rules and Regulations, IMO Conventions and Naval National Standards. Good knowledge of Naval Ship Code an asset
  • Ability to obtain the required security clearances to perform the role with the Australian Navy
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work
