Lloyd’s Register Canada Limited is part of the Lloyds Register Group, a premier independent classification society with global coverage.  We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified Naval Safety and Risk Specialist to help support the Naval Liaison Office in Ottawa.  The focus will be on naval and governmental organizations aimed at delivering safety and risk work to the Americas Area. 


Job Responsibilities:


  • Provide Subject Matter Expertise in the areas of safety management and risk management.
  • Support clients in the development and implementation of Safety and Risk policies, guidance and related processes and procedures.
  • Support clients in the development of safety management plans and safety cases.
  • Carry out review and assessment of safety and risk related documentation, processes, and procedures.
  • Draft proposals and quotations in response to client enquiries in the agreed format.
  • Review deliverables to ensure technical and contractual compliance prior to release to client.
  • Prepare and present technical reports and provide advice and recommendations, where appropriate.
  • Liaise with LR Service Delivery offices to ensure client requirements are understood and delivered on time.
  • Provide guidance and training to both internally and externally, as appropriate, and disseminate information to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
  • Assist in service delivery improvement by communicating internal / external feedback as appropriate.
  • Travel, nationally and/or internationally, may be required.




  • A Degree or an equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by LR within the relevant field of engineering or physical science or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer. Formal education in safety and/or risk engineering an asset.
  • Ability to obtain SECRET and / or NATO SECRET security clearance from the Canadian Industrial Security Directorate (CISD) and Controlled Goods Program clearance from the Controlled Goods Directorate (CGD) for access to Canadian government projects.
  •  Membership in an appropriate professional institution (or the ability to become a member).
  • Experience working with a Classification Society, a consultancy or similar organization. Direct experience with safety and/or risk engineering in a marine environment an asset.
  • Familiarity with (commercial and/or naval) safety regulatory framework, standards, guidelines or codes of practice with emphasis on ISM Code, ISO 31000, ANEP 77 (NSC), MILSTD 882E, DEFSTAN 0056.
  • Ability to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging principles/concepts of safety management and risk management.
  • Strong written communication skills. Experience in writing formal documentation such as policy and procedures an asset.
  • Strong analytical skills. Experience in review and assessment of technical information and documentation an asset.
  • Awareness of technical and commercial management processes (e.g. project management, process management, quality management).
  • Knowledge of, and experience working in, naval programs and/or government organizations and procurement an asset.
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work. Proficiency in the French or Spanish languages an asset.
