We have an opportunity for a Technical Safety and Risk Specialist to join our Naval Liaison Office (NLO) to support the delivery of technical safety and risk management work to naval and governmental organizations throughout North, Central and South America.

This position is based out of our office in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is full time for a fixed term (until 30-June-2026) with the possibility of extension to full time permanent employment.
We have flexible working arrangements which allow for a combination of in-office and at-home work.
What you will do:
- Provide subject matter expertise in the areas of system safety, safety management and risk management.
- Support technical safety and risk management activities ensuring high-quality deliverables that meet contractual and budgetary requirements.
- Support clients in the development and implementation of technical safety and risk management policies, guidance and related processes and procedures.
- Support clients in activities such as safety (risk) assessments.
- Prepare and present technical reports and provide advice and recommendations, where appropriate.
- Provide relevant guidance and training, both internally and externally as appropriate, and disseminate information to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
- Establish, develop and maintain client relationships, using feedback to continually enhance existing services, processes/ procedures and deliverables.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
- Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline, technical knowledge and industry awareness, including the support of relevant working groups, seminars and conferences, as required.
What you will need:
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a minimum of RELIABILITY* security clearance from the Contract Security Program (CSP) and clearance under the Controlled Goods Program (CGP).
- A Degree or an equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by LR within the relevant field of engineering or physical science or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
- Membership in an appropriate professional institution (or the ability to become a member).
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in a technical role working with a Classification Society, a consultancy or similar organization delivering technical services and products within defined budgets and timelines. Direct experience with safety and/or risk management in a marine environment an asset.
- Experience and technical knowledge in technical safety and risk management techniques / principles, standards, and regulatory requirements as applied to a marine environment. Familiarity with ISM Code, ISO 31000, ANEP 77(NSC), MILSTD 882E, and DEFSTAN 0056 is desirable.
- Ability to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology.
- Ability to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to analyse and solve engineering problems.
- Experience in reviewing and assessing technical information and documentation., with the ability to produce and technically review comprehensive and detailed written reports.
- Awareness of technical and commercial management processes (e.g. project management, process management, quality management).
- Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work. Proficiency in a second language such as French or Spanish is desirable.
- Effective interpersonal skills, including strong communication skills. Experience in workshop facilitation is desirable.
- Ability to travel nationally/internationally, as required.
*Eligibility for a RELIABILTY security clearance typically requires five years of verifiable background information. The process involves reference inquiries, verification of qualifications, criminal records checks, and credit checks (as required) and fingerprints.
