Senior Specialist - Naval

Lloyd’s Register

Location: - Bristol, UK

What we’re looking for

The Lloyd's Register Naval Centre of Expertise (NCoE) in Bristol delivers a unique and essential service to Shipyards, Navies, and LR colleagues worldwide, supporting the growth, development, and delivery of the global LR Naval Business.

As part of the NCoE, the Projects Team provides technical consultancy that aids in the development, selection, and application of standards and certification of naval vessels, particularly during the acquisition stages, for Naval authorities, Shipyards, Designers, and Acquisition Teams.

In the UK, the NCoE is actively involved in frameworks supporting the Ministry of Defence (MoD) through Naval Design Partnering (NDP) and Engineering Design Partnering (EDP) contracts. These contracts focus on providing effective and responsive support to the MoD, especially in standards management and development, as well as in delivering specialist engineering and core certification services.

Locally and globally, the Projects Team offers high-quality and valued support to navies, shipyards, and local LR offices engaged in the procurement, construction, and delivery of naval assets to Lloyd's Class. We are currently engaged with multiple stakeholders in future naval projects, providing an opportunity to influence and support critical decision-making processes early in the procurement cycle.

This role within the Projects Team involves managing and delivering complex and challenging tasks using a mix of skills and resources from within the candidate's competency and capability, as well as from across the Lloyd's Register Group or industry partners.

With the increasing demand on the team to support the rapid development of the LR naval business, these opportunities will not always require traditional classification solutions. The ability to combine and construct service offerings to meet specific customer requirements will necessitate innovative thinking and problem-solving. The candidate is expected to contribute to this work and support the development and delivery of these tasks.

Additionally, the candidate will support the team’s ongoing work, including contributions to the International Naval Safety Association (INSA), the LR Naval Ship Technical Committee (NSTC), naval safety cases, and the emerging area of autonomous vessel assurance. The role will allow for the identification and development of similar opportunities in line with the candidate’s experience and interests.

The NCoE Projects Team offers a unique opportunity to develop and deliver service offerings to a range of naval stakeholders, known for providing practical solutions to complex naval problems effectively and efficiently. The successful candidate will join a small team with a respected reputation in this field.
