Reporting into the Product Owner, the Scrum Master is responsible for managing the delivery of all work applying an appropriate adaptation of ‘Agile’ practices. They will be responsible for the successful delivery of activities within the Product/Platform Team through the team’s delivery, driving the pace of the team output whilst focusing on quality and cost reduction.

 

The Scrum Master needs to have have a solid understanding of Agile and be able to tailor Agile Practices such as Scrum and Kanban to suit the nature of work and will also be able to apply Value Stream Mapping and other Lean Techniques to improve the flow of work through reducing waste.

 

This role will be responsible for working with the Product Owner & Business Analysts to translate requirements into appropriate plans whilst maintaining Agile principles. These will then be used to communicate with external stakeholders to communicate progress and to adapt these plans.

 

The Scrum Master must be familiar with breaking work up into Themes, Epics, Stories and Tasks and using Story Mapping techniques to create Burn Up charts, Value Based Milestones, Burn Down Charts, Cumulative Flow Diagrams, etc. and they will understand the importance of Velocity and Work in Progress Limits as tools to manage and improve the flow of work.

The Scrum Master will be responsible for creating the right working environment that promotes employee happiness and productivity. They will create a learning environment that dries continuous improvement.

 

Responsibilities

  • Implement, run and improve an appropriate adaptation of Agile Practice (e.g. Scrum) within the Product /Platform Team following a DevOps methodology.
  • Coaches the development squads on agile (e.g. Scrum) values and principles.  Guides the teams to develop and refine processes to promote accountability, transparency and continuous improvement. 
  • Facilitates the removal of impediments to the team’s progress using effective cross-discipline communication.  Protects team from outside distractions.
  • Facilitates all team ceremonies e.g. daily stand-ups, sprint planning, sprint review and sprint retrospective meetings.  Ensures they are productive and kept within the timebox.
  • Manage the Product Team (including multiple vendors and other stakeholders) and stimulate multi-functional and cross-functional working, a highly collaborative environment and full visibility of all the work
  • Enabling a collaborative and adaptive culture, ability to ensure open communication channels
  • Work closely and use effective communication with distributed stakeholders (product owners, architects, developers, expert users and QA engineers) to meet projects goals/sprint goals that deliver features in the target application. 
  • Assess and improve user stories with team, ensure acceptance criteria is successfully created by the team and effectively liaise with stakeholders in doing so.
  • Measure, analyse and improve the performance of the team and look at metrics like Sprint Velocity, Technical Debt, Unplanned work etc. Continuous improvement is key
  • Conduct Lean analysis such as Value Stream Mapping to optimise constraints and remove impediments. The goal is to improve the flow of work and deliver more value
  • Inspire a Learning Environment – will read, research and learn whilst teaching and coaching others.
  • Work with Product Owner to define objectives and scope and provide reports to the Product Owner on the performance of delivery against targets
  • Monitor and report on financial run rate of the product team to support the Product Owner’s financial budget forecasts
  • Work with the Service Owner to schedule planned maintenance on the various technologies and application components within the Product
  • Responsible for alignment with enterprise governance standard and processes for technology, service and security
  • Collaborate with others across our Digital Products team to improve and implement best practices.
  • Build and maintain culture that there is a productive environment where team members ‘own’ the product and enjoy working on it.

 

To be considered

  • Respected and proven experience as a scrum master with multi-discipline teams of 6-8 people in a commercial software environment
  • Excellent knowledge of agile frameworks including ceremonies and artefacts
  • Experience in coaching teams in agile principles as well as team management
  • Experience of managing external teams and contract-driven relationships in an Agile/DevOps environment
  • Solid Understanding of DevOps principles
  • Ability to challenge others and be comfortable with being challenged
  • Experience in problem solving and conflict resolution
  • Excellent communications skills with the ability to tell stories, draw pictures and document the performance of your team effectively
  • Experience in using metrics to track progress of sprints
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Strong experience of using Azure DevOps as a change management tool (backlogs, deployment pipelines, etc)
  • The natural ability to create a collaborative, team focussed and fun environment
  • Scrum Master certification
