Structures Rule Development Specialist

This job advert is for the role of a Structures Rule Development Specialist working in the Marine & Offshore Structures team as part of the UK & Ireland Technical Support Office. The successful candidate would be based at Lloyds Registers Global Technology Centre, Southampton, United Kingdom.


As part of a small and dedicated team, you will be principally working on a wide variety of Rule development projects across the full range of Lloyd’s Register’s Rules and Regulations. Your work will involve interaction with internal and external customers answering technical queries on the Rules. In addition, you will undertake occasional design appraisal in accordance with defined technical authorisations.


You will have access to a range of training courses and professional development opportunities. Working at Lloyd's Register, you will be working alongside design appraisal, software and consultancy departments.


Your duties will include:

  • To perform rule development activities and provide specialist advice within agreed parameters that includes budget constraints and contractual requirements. You will be principally working with Ship Rules, Special Service Craft Rules and Naval Ship Rules but there will be opportunities to be involved with other Rule sets in line with business needs.
  • Discuss/present deliverables with internal/external clients if required
  • Produce deliverables within agreed parameters in a defined format
  • Assess/recommend ideas for new Rule development and prepare and appraise time/manhour estimates for internal/external organisations to undertake the work
  • To coach other employees and disseminate information to achieve effective knowledge transfer and Rule application
  • To pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness.
  • The above duties do not preclude the assignment of other duties by the Technical Manager of Ship Structures Department or their line manager.


Technical / Professional Qualifications / Requirements:

  • The candidate should have a degree in naval architecture, structural engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register.
  • Experience of application and/or background in Lloyd’s Register Ship and/or Special Service Craft and/or Naval ship Rules.
  • Experience in design of special service craft desirable but not essential
  • Experience of Rule development with a Classification society desirable but not essential
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Proficiency in the English Language (written and oral) commensurate with the work and an ability to write detailed technical reports and design appraisal documents.
