Senior Surveyor / Surveyor – Naval Ships (Portsmouth)

The Role

Be part of an independent organisation with a strong purpose – one that is guided by principles, not just profit.  Lloyd`s Register has gained a strong reputation for doing the right thing, even if it means making difficult decisions – so you can work with consistently high standards and professional integrity.

You’ll be part of our Southampton office but supported by our Naval Centre of Expertise – an established world-leading naval classification.  You will be a key part of a small team delivering classification services to the MOD primarily at Portsmouth Naval Base on capital platforms including Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers, T45 destroyers, Future T26 Frigates, as well as other auxiliary and ancillary support ships.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Use your expertise to lead on all electro-mechanical and propulsion systems activities for the delivery of Naval Classification.
  • Support the Lead Surveyor by anticipating, leading, and advising on key technical/mechanical challenges experienced with the delivery of Naval Classification on complex ships.
  • Cultivate good working relationships between LR and key client stakeholders involved in delivering Naval Classification and relevant Statutory Codes.

The Person:

We are looking for someone with a strong marine engineering background to support our current team based in Portsmouth.  Potential candidates could come from any of the following backgrounds:

  • First Post Marine Engineering Officer; Chief Petty Officer/Senior Petty Officer Marine Engineering Technician of the Royal Navy.  Current serving RN personnel will likely be nearing their terminal date, or
  • Ex or currently serving RFA Engineering Officer, or
  • Existing experienced commercial marine surveyors wishing to expand into Naval Classification.
  • Marine Engineers working within the Naval Industrial sector.

What we are looking for in you:

  • A Degree / Foundation Degree / HNC with relevant professional qualifying examinations (Class 1 / MCQ) and sea-going experience.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution at Chartered Engineer level or Incorporated Engineer working towards Chartered Engineer.
  • Eligible to pass UK security clearance.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, Naval classification is more than applying a set of rules.
  • A proven all-round communicator.
  • Enthusiastic about working collaboratively, sharing knowledge and experience with others.
  • Be a self-starter.  We are continuously developing how we do things to support our customer`s goals and will look to you to contribute your ideas to help shape new ways of working.
  • Be safe in what you do, living and promoting Lloyd`s Registers safety culture.
