About the role:

The Technical and Failure Investigation Department (TFI) is part of Lloyd’s Register Professional Services and provides world-class advisory services for investigation of failures and technical issues to global clients by undertaking engineering assessment and evaluation of systems and components to help marine owners and operators minimise business downtime. Using core and advanced engineering skills to identify and understand the root causes of failures, we provide customised solutions to allow recovery back to operation as part of a rapid response service.

The TFI team is based in the UK with a number of Engineers based globally.

Reporting to the TFI Principal Specialist, Asia, a key responsibility of this role is to carry out a wide range of technical and failure investigations which will include vessel and on-site investigation work and collaboration with our own state of the art materials and instrumentation laboratory in Chandler’s Ford, Hampshire, UK.

Technical training will be provided with regard to LR proprietary analysis software, however, the successful candidate must be experienced with the type of work required of the role. Ideally, they will be familiar with use and application of instrumentation and processing of the measured data.

 

Candidate requirements:

  • To provide technical support to the Technical & Failure Investigation, Risk Reliability & Human Factors, Performance Design and Environmental teams as required.
  • To produce deliverables (analysis and formal reporting) within agreed parameters in an appropriate format.
  • To discuss / present deliverables with internal / external clients and be able to suggest alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • Undertake administration as required in line with current processes and procedures.
  • Produce proposals and define required scope of work to meet client’s expectations. Ensure consistency of proposals to clients according to established procedures.
  • To assess / recommend the time / value of the work to be undertaken for an internal / external client within an agreed fee / cost structure and within the commercial aspects of the contract.
  • To make recommendations based on internal / external client feedback to assist in service delivery improvement and to help build the business.
  • Be pro-active in sharing knowledge with the team and advising colleagues based on reviews and own experience; build an internal network of contacts in order to gain knowledge from senior personnel within Lloyd’s Register.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  • To pursue Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • To mentor / coach other technical employees to achieve effective technical knowledge transfer and application.
  • To undertake project management where applicable including monitoring project progress and spend against budget and contract requirements.

 

Essential candidate requirements:

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
  • Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work i.e. writing formal technical investigation reports.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB for data post processing.
  • Good general knowledge of marine power plant machinery including internal combustion engines (mainly diesel and dual fuel), electric motors, propulsion shafting and alignment techniques, steering gear, gearing, dampers, couplings, propellers, pumps & piping, steam plant etc.
  • Experience of the installation of ship propulsion shaftlines including on-site general metrology measurements, sighting (optical/laser), system modelling and analysis, bearing load measurement via jack-ups and strain gauge techniques etc.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and experience to a wide range of technical investigations on client vessels/sites in the marine and offshore industry providing timely solutions in line with client expectations.
  • Perform duties in accordance with LR HSES and client site requirements as required.
  • Post-graduation, completion of a marine/mechanical engineering apprenticeship or recognised development period within technical specialism.
  • Be prepared to work away from home on jobs in shipyards or on ships in port and/or at sea on a worldwide basis for duration of a few days to several weeks at a time. This can amount to approximately 100+ days per year away from home. However, it is expected this role will perform work mainly in China.
  • Driving licence.
  • Metallurgy knowledge an advantage.
  • Experience of performing RCA investigations an advantage.
  • Experience of vibration measurement and basic analysis an advantage.
