Role purpose:
We are seeking individuals who can fulfil the role of appraising lifting appliances such as cranes, lifting tools, spreader beams, elevators or engine room cranes. The design aspects need to be evaluated either to the LR Code for Lifting Appliances in a Marine environment and/or other international standards. The ideal candidates should possess the necessary competence, knowledge and experience to conduct such design appraisals. A strong background in structural engineering including fatigue calculations. It is expected ideally supplemented by knowledge of related machinery and control aspects as well as experience with project management skills appropriate to serve our international client base. Furthermore, we value individuals who can offer technical support to designers and have a high commitment towards client satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:
- To carry out design appraisal of lifting appliance structural plans for both newbuilt and modifications in accordance with LR’s Code for Lifting Appliances and applicable International/National technical standards for lifting gear.
- Deliver projects in line with cost and time limitations fulfilling our client’s expectations.
- Provide technical advice / guidance to LR field surveyors and clients on matters relating to Lloyd’s Register Rules, International and Flag requirements in areas of technical expertise on a senior level.
- To build and maintain a good relationship with our clients and internal stakeholders;
- Conduct technical discussion and provide technical advice to internal and external clients.
- To discuss and present the deliverable with the internal / external client and be able to suggest solutions where appropriate.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
Technical / Professional Qualifications / Require:
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Naval Architecture or equivalent and/or Chartered/Professional qualification and a member of a relevant professional institution;
- Relevant at least five years experience in Lifting Appliance structural design/ plan appraisal.
- The role will be to examine documents for compliance with design standards from clients. Lloyd's Register acts as third party review organisation and certifies lifting appliances to technical standards. The role is for plan approval which forms the basis of the later survey activities undertaken by surveyors.
- Thorough knowledge on design principles/structural idealization /loadings of lifting appliances and a sound understanding of the governing design conditions and the rule/code requirements.
- Good experience in structural analysis (FEA) of lifting appliance structures and working knowledge on any prominently used FE software, preferably DLUBAL RFEM.
- Experience in the application of fatigue design Codes and Standards.
- Have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, to prioritise work and meet LR and Clients’ deadlines, and to work effectively under pressure.
- Good skill to conduct technical conversation with clients and maintain good relationships with client with client focus mind-set;
- Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work and to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills.
