We are currently looking for an experienced Specialist to play a key role working within the fire and safety team, carrying out complex examinations of Passive & Active Fire Protection products, giving pragmatic advice to colleagues and clients and also to mentor less experienced colleagues.


What are you going to do?


The Fire & Safety Team within the UK&I Technical Support Office has a strong specialisation in design review for Type Approval and MED Certification of Fire Protection products for marine vessels and offshore facilities, which are Certified in accordance with Statutory Regulations, Flag State Requirements and Classification Rules and International Standards.

The Fire & Safety Team mainly carries out Type Approval, MED Certification, plan appraisal and consultancy in the areas of marine vessels and offshore facilities according to a range of statutory codes and rules, international standards etc. The work the Fire & Safety Team carries-out has helped cement LR’s position as one of the leading class society in the maritime industry and key Certification provided for fire protection products on offshore hydrocarbon facilities.

The Fire & Safety Team also plays a leading role in the implementation of new IMO and IACS regulations and provides guidance and clarification to both LR colleagues and clients worldwide.

The Fire & Safety Team is also at the forefront of new goal-based regulations with work covering innovative vessel arrangements approved using alternative design and arrangement regulations, risk-based analysis and fire engineered solutions.

Working with LR at this key time with major changes in the marine regulatory framework will offer an excellent challenge to the right applicant with work on number of new projects which are at the forefront of marine technology.


 Reporting to the Team Lead the ‘Key Responsibilities’ are:


  • Type Approval of Passive & Active Fire Protection products to various statutory codes, international standards and rules in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Assistance and coordination of new rules and regulations relating to Passive & Active Fire Protection products and various other statutory requirements.
  • Representation of LR and IACS at various technical committee meetings and forums which could include IMO MSC and SSE sub-committees.
  • Conducting occasional site visits at various ship yards, client sites, testing laboratories, or production facilities as required to successfully complete projects. 
  • Contributing fire protection products and safety expertise to risk-based project teams to ensure project outcomes are met. 
  • Assisting the business in the bid and win process for new projects by accurately estimating time requirements for a range of projects.
  • Management and oversight of project schedules, financial tracking, contract risk management procedures and issues plus associated project documentation and supporting compliance with all legal, statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Attendance at and preparation of reports as required for audits that are conducted by external bodies.
  • Providing visible, pro-active HS&E leadership, ensuring that all LR Corporate and local HS&E policies and processes are followed, including any necessary client-specific requirements, in particular, ensuring that stated requirements for incident reporting, task risk assessment and safe methods of work are followed.
  • Actively seeking to ensure client satisfaction and to generate new opportunities with our clients.


The successful applicant should have:


  • Demonstrable experience of the IMO Fire Test Procedures Code requirements and ideally producing Fire Type Approval and / or MED Module B Certificates.
  • Demonstratable experience of the Hydrocarbon & Jet Fire protection products international testing standards such as BS 476-20, UL1709, ISO 22899-1, ISO 209021.
  • In depth knowledge of Marine & Offshore Fire Protection Products and Safety Legislation for a variety of ship types and offshore facilities.
  • Broad knowledge of SOLAS, other international regulations (e. g. FTP Code, FSS Code, ISO Standards, UL Standards, NFPA).
  • Basic project management techniques are desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Fire Protection Products.
  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme).
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Working towards achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including technical report writing, having the ability to adapt and work to tight deadlines .
  • Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work.
  • Good general appreciation Marine & Offshore industry standards and practices.
  • Knowledge of Classification / Certification / Verification is desirable.
