The Role: 

  • The work involves design appraisal of a wide range of components on both existing and new construction vessels, primarily in the Marine and Defence sector.
  • Assessment of design drawings and reports supported by your own analysis for compliance against LR rules and international codes and standards.
  • Undertake research in order to provide input to development of LR’s rules to support the Maritime decarbonisation objectives.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to Lloyds Register’s internal and external stakeholders, by answering written queries or attending meetings.


You will: 

  • Be Degree qualified and preferably a member of a professional body, with an accreditation from one of the recognised institutions such as the IMechE or IMarEST.
  • Have a design background, preferably with field/ ship operations experience and ideally, knowledge of classification society activities.
  • Have an expert level knowledge in most of the below areas.
    • Power and propulsion systems
    • Mechanical design and material properties
    • Two and four stroke engines design
    • Geartrains, vibration theory (torsional, lateral & axial)
    • Risk analysis including HADIDs and HAZOPS
    • Finite element analysis
  • Act as Technical Authority on behalf of LR within a brief period including representing LR in client and industry body meetings.
  • Be self-motivated and client focused, with the ability to communicate with people at a wide variety of levels from graduates to senior management level.
