About the role:

 

This is an exciting opportunity to join Lloyd’s Register’s Maritime Performance Services (LR MPS) group on our journey to be the industry’s trusted advisor that improves the performance and sustainability of our customer’s business. A key part of the LR MPS group is our advanced computational modelling expertise that we use to provide assurances to our clients on performance, environmental compliance, and root causes of failure. Due to the unprecedented demand for these services driven largely by the challenge of reduction and ultimately elimination of greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, we are looking to recruit a senior marine engineering consultant with exceptional skills in computational fluid dynamics and ship science.

 

The primary responsibility of the role will be to execute and deliver projects to our external clients either as an individual or as part of a larger team within the computer aided engineering team. However, the role may also provide support to our other teams involved in Naval Architecture, Risk, Regulatory Compliance and Failure Investigations. The role will involve assessment of complex problems for internal and external clients where the parameters are not well defined and previous experience does not provide any precedent. This role will support LR’s rapidly growing services based around ship performance, Computational Fluid Dynamics and data analysis.

 

The role will be based at LR’s prestigious Global Technology Centre (GTC) on the University of Southampton campus (UK) and will benefit from LR’s flexible working approach. You will also have access to many knowledgeable colleagues and training courses to pursue professional development.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake project work as defined by team leaders mainly using numerical modelling as well as data analysis to draw conclusions in areas such as ship performance, failure, and environmental impact investigations.
  • Produce deliverables to the defined scope of work including high quality technical reports according to established procedures, on time and within budget.
  • Discuss and present the project progress and deliverables with the internal / external clients and suggest solutions where appropriate.
  • Assume responsibility for project management and administration from inception through to closure according to established procedures with emphasis on quality, timing, and cost.
  • Be willing to occasionally attend domestic or international client and project meetings.
  • Support Naval Architecture, Risk, and Failure Investigation teams on an ‘as required’ basis receiving training where necessary.
  • Produce scopes of work and proposals to meet client expectations. Ensure consistency of proposals to clients according to established procedures.
  • Identify needs for further work, pursue opportunities for increased scope of work and be able to present clients with a full range of services offered.
  • Achieve targets for chargeable time in line with team management expectations.
  • Be pro-active in sharing knowledge with the team and advising colleagues based on reviews and own experience
  • Maintain and develop business network within key contacts (internal to LR, clients, universities, institutions, suppliers, competitors, etc.).
  • Coaching of less experienced colleagues and act as a mentor to colleagues as agreed with line manager.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.

 

 To be successful in the role, you will need:

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by LR within the field of marine / aerospace / mechanical engineering or physical science. Post graduate degree in engineering (MSc, MEng, or PhD) is not required but would be an asset.
  • Proven ability in applying CFD and data analysis software tools to deliver technical solutions to clients.
  • Proven ability in the technical domains of hydrodynamics, naval architecture, and fluid structure interaction
  • Proficient with data analysis and programming languages (e.g. Python, Java, or C)
  • Working knowledge of Linux and CAD packages (e.g. Rhino 3D).
  • Ability to apply theoretical, analytical, and numerical skills for modelling, data interpretation, and problem classification, in order to solve complex challenges.
  • Proven ability in the Project Management process, gained through experience, involving complex projects and stakeholder relationships.
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work
  • Experience of the shipping industry is highly desirable.
