Role Summary:

We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Specialist to play a key role working within the fire and safety team, carrying out complex examinations of Passive & Active Fire Protection products, giving pragmatic advice to colleagues and clients and also to mentor less experienced colleagues.

The Fire & Safety Team has a strong specialisation in design review for Type Approval, MED & UKCA Certification of Fire Protection products for marine vessels and offshore facilities, which are Certified in accordance with Statutory Regulations, Flag State Requirements and Classification Rules and International Standards.

Working with LR at this key time with major changes in the marine regulatory framework will offer an excellent challenge to the right applicant with work on number of new projects which are at the forefront of marine technology.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Support the team in carrying out Type Approval, MED & UKCA Certification, plan appraisal and advise in the areas of marine vessels and offshore facilities according to a range of statutory codes and rules, international standards etc. 
  • Contribute to the team’s initiatives towards the implementation of new IMO and IACS regulations and provides guidance and clarification to both LR colleagues and clients worldwide.
  • The Fire & Safety Team is also at the forefront of new goal-based regulations with work covering innovative vessel arrangements approved using alternative design and arrangement regulations, risk-based analysis and fire engineered solutions. 
  • Support in the Type Approval of Passive & Active Fire Protection products to various statutory codes, international standards, and rules in a consistent and timely manner, within agreed parameters that includes budget constraints and contractual requirements.
  • Assist and coordinate of new rules and regulations relating to Passive & Active Fire Protection products and various other statutory requirements.
  • Provide sound technical and regulatory guidance to Clients and participate in meetings or workshops where required. The work may require occasional a travel to LR locations globally.
  • Conduct occasional site visits at various shipyards, client sites, testing laboratories, or production facilities as required to successfully complete projects.
  • Assist the business in the bid and win process for new projects by accurately estimating time requirements for a range of projects.
  • Contribute fire protection products and safety expertise to risk-based project teams to ensure project outcomes are met.
  • Manage and oversight of project schedules, financial tracking, contract risk management procedures and issues plus associated project documentation and supporting compliance with all legal, statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge, and awareness.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Actively seeking to ensure client satisfaction and to generate new opportunities with our clients.

 

Key Health & Safety Responsibilities:

  • Eliminate or minimise employee's exposure to risks by reviewing, regularly, the health and safety risk register, applying appropriate controls, communicating results of risk assessment and ensuring health and safety is considered in the planning and execution of all LR activities.
  • Manage your own and your team's compliance with health and safety rules, instructions, systems and legal requirements, ensuring employees are suitably trained and adequate resources are available to work safely.
  • Monitor and review health and safety performance, observe safety behaviours in the workplace, taking appropriate corrective and preventative action as necessary and suggesting and implementing improvement activities.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of Engineering or Naval Architecture (minimum of two years programme).
  • Experience of Marine & Offshore industry standards and practices, preferably over 5 years.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including technical report writing, having the ability to adapt and work to tight deadlines.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Working towards achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work.
  • Demonstrable experience of the IMO Fire Test Procedures Code requirements and ideally producing Fire Type Approval and / or MED Module B Certificates.
  • Demonstratable experience of the Hydrocarbon & Jet Fire protection products international testing standards such as BS 476-20, UL1709, ISO 22899-1, ISO 20902
  • In depth knowledge of Marine & Offshore Fire Protection Products and Safety Legislation for a variety of ship types and offshore facilities.

 

Preferred but not required

  • Knowledge of Classification / Certification / Verification is desirable.
  • Basic project management techniques.
  • Knowledge of SOLAS, other international regulations (e. g. FTP Code, FSS Code, ISO Standards, UL Standards, NFPA).
  • Experience with offshore fire protection products (intumescent coatings, cementitious, flexible systems, rigid enclosure systems, cladding systems etc.)
  • Experience with testing standards and testing laboratories.
