Role Profile

As part of an on-going commitment to providing our clients with an exceptional experience, Lloyd’s Register is seeking to expand its team of Specialists within the Ballast Water Management Team. The BWM team is based in Southampton and successfully delivered number of statutory and class type approval of Ballast Water Treatment Systems. BWM team is providing specialist technical support to BWTS installations and developing product portfolio for upcoming Biofouling regulations.


If you have experience in the BWTS design/ installations / survey and keen to develop the knowledge in BWM & Biofouling as a senior specialist by helping us continue our global success in service delivery, then we want to hear from you.


In accordance with LR's 'New ways of working' you may require working from Southampton GTC from a minimum two days per week.


You will

  • To perform assessments, undertake technical project management and provide specialist advice for service delivery within agreed parameters that includes budget constraints and contractual requirements.
  • To review, approve test plans and witness the testing, as applicable and coordinate relevant technical disciplines to complete the approval process
  • To discuss / present appraisal conclusions with internal and external clients and suggesting/influencing alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • To pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness.
  • To coach other employees, as appropriate, and disseminate information to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
  • To support and participate in the development of future legislation – such as IMO and IACS – and
  • Lloyd’s Register’s Rules to enhance safety and environmental protection relating to BWM and Biofouling
  • To Assess the risks and work in a safe manner at all times, robustly implementing health and safety
  • rules, instructions and systems and refuse to undertake work that compromises your safety or health.
  • To report in a timely manner all incidents including near miss and safety observations (NMSO), accidents and injuries and raise any health and safety concerns with your line manager.


To be considered

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering, physical science (minimum of two years programme) or a qualification from a marine institution as a certified ship’s engineering officer with relevant sea-going experience.
  • Experience in the approvals and/or installation of BWTS or alternatively experience of surveying BWTS on board ships.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution
  • Working towards or achieving charted or incorporated engineering status.
  • To be able to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of engineering problems.
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work.
  • Experience in system engineering and/or environmental engineering (desirable)
  • Knowledge on statutory requirements for BWM and Biofouling (desirable)
  • Basic Knowledge in Marine biology and Ecotoxicology relating to BWM & Biofouling (desirable)
