About the role:

 

This is an exciting opportunity to join Lloyd’s Register’s Maritime Performance Services (LR MPS) group on our journey to be the industry’s trusted advisor that improves the performance and sustainability of our customer’s business. A key part of the LR MPS group is our ship performance team which provides advisory services to support client challenges associated with decarbonisation, energy efficiency technologies, efficient and sustainable ship operations, independent assurance and verification of performance and design. With the shipping industry now faced with the challenge of reduction and ultimately elimination of greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, LR’s ship performance services are in high demand and growing rapidly.

 

We are currently looking to recruit a talented consultancy manager with a passion for marine technology and the global decarbonisation challenge to lead and grow our ship performance advisory team. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the ship performance line group within the Maritime Performance Services advisory business. The line group consists of talented engineers, Naval Architects, and data science professionals who employ a range of skills such as advanced data analytics, onboard data acquisition, and engineering model development to deliver solutions to client’s challenges. The Ship Performance Manager will work closely with our digital products and services teams to provide SME support on agreed development projects.

 

The role will be based at LR’s prestigious Global Technology Centre (GTC) on the University of Southampton campus (UK) and will benefit from LR’s flexible working approach.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Line management responsibility for the ship performance line group that includes governance, quality assurance and career development of group members.
  • Technical authority on ship performance for LR advisory services and provide specialist support / advice to internal / external clients.
  • Play an active role in ship performance capability growth within the group and across the global regional hubs by mentoring / coaching other employees to achieve effective knowledge transfer and determining the need for training and talent development.
  • Monitor developments in the industry, and competitors, within the discipline of ship performance and develop new services and products that are aligned with market demands and the wider advisory group strategy.
  • Work closely with the digital advisory teams to support development of innovative digital based services and products that meet clients' current and emerging challenges in the areas of ship performance and energy efficiency technology. Support will be through supply of technical guidance and providing line group resources as required.
  • Prepare proposals to address client challenges where the parameters may not be well defined and require solutions where previous experience does not provide any precedent.
  • The role may also include managing and delivering projects, as required.
  • Monitoring and improving the resource planning and project execution processes to ensure client projects are delivered in accordance with quality system requirements, cost structures and budgetary / contractual requirements.
  • Pro-actively share knowledge with the team and the company at large for technical and promotional purposes.
  • Build a network of contacts in order to gain knowledge and promote the business.
  • Achieve targets for chargeable time of line group, in line with team management expectations.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness.

 

To be successful in the role, you will need:

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the field of marine engineering or mechanical engineering. Post graduate degree in engineering (MSc, MEng, or PhD) is not required but would be highly regarded.
  • Previous experience managing engineering consultancy teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of marine propulsion, hydrodynamics, and naval architecture.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the project management process gained through experience and training.
  • Excellent communication skills, which are necessary for effective project management, conflict resolution, interacting with superiors and effective client engagement.
  • Flexibility to take on new challenges with an enquiring mind.
  • Ambitious, positive, highly organised, and self-motivated attitude.
  • Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work.
