About the role:

 

This is an exciting opportunity to join LR on our journey to be the industry’s trusted advisor that improves the performance and sustainability of our customer’s business. A key part of this journey is to harness the highly respected LR intellectual capital and vast data sources available to us in digital products and services for the benefit of our clients and key stakeholders. We are currently looking to recruit a talented ship performance modeller with a passion for marine technology and the global decarbonisation challenge, to support the development of our digital products.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for researching and implementing ship performance models based on physics and data analyses. You will create and improve models for of ship powering requirements, engines, alternative fuels, shipping operations and energy savings technologies to support best in class vessel performance and emissions modelling. Your models will be coded using Python and implemented into LR’s decarbonisation digital products that serve a global customer base. An agile team with product owner, developers/testers (both internal and external) and digital architects will support you to transform your models into digital products.

 

The role will be based at LR’s prestigious Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Southampton UK and will benefit from LR’s flexible working approach.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with stakeholders (product owners, developers, engineers, and testers) to design and develop new engineering requirements into product concepts and working prototypes
  • Design, create, and deliver computer code in Python for the agreed engineering requirements
  • Participate in Agile development activities, attending daily stand-ups, sprint planning, sprint review and sprint retrospective meetings
  • Work closely with the agile development team to ensure the successful adoption of your performance models and code into scalable digital products
  • Ideate and test new ways to improve existing performance models and solutions; aim for higher performance in terms of speed, data size and simulation time
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams drawing on wider Lloyd’s Register resources to deliver integrated solutions
  • Achieve targets for model development, in line with team management expectations
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards
  • Pursue Continuing Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness
  • Build a network of contacts in order to gain knowledge
  • Pro-actively share knowledge with the team and other colleagues as appropriate, to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application

 To be successful in the role, you will need:

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the field of physical sciences, mathematics, computer science, Naval architecture, or mechanical engineering. Post graduate degree in engineering or data science (MSc, MEng, or PhD) is not required but would be an asset
  • A genuine interest and curiosity for all things digital, data, and digital transformation in the maritime industry
  • Proven ability in the domains of engineering model development, simulation, and software development
  • Appreciation of the process to turn models into maintainable and production ready services through collaborative software development
  • Excellent and demonstratable logical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability with Python, NumPy, SciPy, databases and cloud services is essential
  • Domain knowledge of naval architecture
  • Excellent and demonstratable communication and influencing skills at all stakeholder levels
  • Good presentation and time management skills
  • Proactive self-starter; self-organised with a team player attitude and able to help any team member when needed; strive to learn more and new skills
  • The ability to work on your own or as part of a team on larger projects
  • Flexibility to take on new tasks with an enquiring mind
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work
