The Marine and Offshore Software team is looking for a Software Product Expert to support and develop our Marine software solutions.

Role purpose

 

Contribute to the vision of how a software product should operate, what it should do and how it should look and behave. Contribute to the balancing of the long-term wider business needs against, medium or long-term objectives or perspectives. Play an active role in the development of software products by contributing specialist knowledge and experience.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • To provide expert guidance to the development team on the required functionality of the software, including user interaction, naval architecture, design appraisal, prescriptive assessment and direct calculation. 
  • Validate the correctness of any calculations and take part in day to day testing and user acceptance testing of the application.
  • To contribute to the provision of specialist training, support and advice to internal and external clients and users of the software applications.
  • To work with the software development team to ensure they understand the requirements from a technical perspective of each item and help define the user workflow and path through the product.
  • To work with the development team to ensure the development meets the technical project goals to the satisfaction of internal and external clients.
  • To support the development team in estimating the  effort for product features  by providing technical background and input from an Subject Matter Expert (SME) perspective. 
  • To help define and prioritise via technical input (the opinion of the SME) the product backlog items that fulfil all features, functions, requirements, enhancements, and fixes to deliver the user stories.
  • To ensure adequate technical documentation is produced for each release.
  • To mentor / coach other employees, as appropriate, to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application of knowledge.
  • Undertake administration as required in line with current processes and procedures.

 

Technical / Professional Qualifications / Requirements

 

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of naval architecture, ship design and design appraisal.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of prescriptive assessment and direct calculation techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience of prescriptive assessment and direct calculation software applications, such as RulesCalc, ShipRight, Special Service Craft etc.
  • An understanding and appreciation of the Lloyd’s Register maritime business and the needs of customers and users of the software.
  • Experience of delivering technical customer support to internal and external software users would be an advantage.
  • Experience within a software development team, preferably working in an agile development process would be an advantage.
  • Experience as a software developer, working with C++, .NET, FORTRAN or python would be an advantage.
