The Role

A vacancy exists in our Technical Policy Team for a Lead Technical Specialist. Whilst the team is based the Southampton Global Technology Centre, UK, the successful candidate could report to the team remotely and be based in another location. The principal responsibility is to ensure marine regulations, procedures and guidance are clear, logical, comprehensive and concise, and can be readily understood by internal and external clients. The successful applicant would have significant input into the development of how LR presents and delivers Technical Reference Material for Surveyors, making effective use of technological (computer Apps and tools), and into the development of future class and certification, accommodating new technologies and digital data.

This role is within the Survey Policy Section of the Technical Policy Group and offers an ideal opportunity for a dynamic, experienced and innovative Surveyor.

Candidates should have significant marine survey experience in positions of responsibility related to ship operations and surveys, with some new construction, components/marine products knowledge and experience, and be capable of making technical decisions at a high level, and operating unsupervised.

An in-depth knowledge of marine Classification, experience of working in a Marine Classification team and knowledge of IACS, would be beneficial.

The role is within a team of subject matter experts who are responsible for:

• Global governance of Survey Policy

• Maintenance of Classification Periodical Survey Regulations (Rules Part 1)

• Marine Survey Procedures Manual

• Development of Technical Reference Material for Surveyors

• Machinery Planned Maintenance Schemes

• Providing internal marine survey guidance

This particular role will work closely with the Survey Regulations and Procedures Manager and will have specific responsibilities for the upkeep of the survey regulations and marine survey procedures, with a focus on improving how technical reference material is delivered to Surveyors and acting as an authority for future product development, providing direction and guidance.   


What do we ask from you?

Qualified Professional Engineer with significant marine surveying  experience including in a position of responsibility related to ship operations and surveys.

An in-depth knowledge of marine Classification and knowledge of IACS desirable.

Strong technically, with excellent communication skills and a willingness to offer solutions to problems effecting all areas of the Marine and Offshore business. Capable of making technical decisions at a high level, and operating unsupervised.

• Knowledge of marine classification and statutory processes and procedures commensurate with practical experience of surveys of a wide variety of ship types

• Excellent command of the English language - the work will involve producing Technical Reference Material for Surveyors

• Membership of an appropriate professional institution

• Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status

• A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd's Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship's Engineering Officer

• Proficiency in the use of computer Apps and tools desirable.
