Lead Alternative Fuel Technical Specialist
The Role
A vacancy exists in our Technical Directorate for an Alternative Fuel Technical Specialist. The primary responsibility is to provide support and guidance both internally, to LR’s Technical Specialists and Surveyors, and externally, to LR’s clients and the wider industry in order to ensure the successful conversion of existing LR classed vessels to operate on alternative fuels and alternative sources of energy. Linked to this, the successful applicant would develop related supporting and guidance material and have significant input into the development of LR’s Rules and Regulations.
This role is based within the Engineering Team within the Technical Policy Group and offers an ideal opportunity for an experienced designer or design appraisal technical specialist to apply their knowledge and experience in the high profile, fast moving and technically challenging projects that onboard conversions represent recognising the decarbonisation challenge facing the industry. While an in-depth knowledge of Classification and Statutory Conventions is essential, the successful applicant will have demonstrable competence and extensive experience in the detailed design or detailed design appraisal of both methanol fuel systems and hydrogen fuel systems and ideally the conceptual design of ammonia fuel systems both for new construction and ideally existing ships. In the design or design appraisal of methanol and hydrogen fuel systems candidates should be able to demonstrate their leadership from initial engagement with the client through to final design or final design approval.
While the conversion projects will need to satisfy the Rules and Regulations related to alternative fuel systems and the associated power generation machinery and equipment, each conversion project will be unique to that particular vessel and the successful applicant will recognise the regulatory challenges that conversion of fuel systems and the related power generation machinery and equipment onboard will present. As such, the successful applicant will have demonstrable competence in risk assessment and an understanding of equivalent safety in the context of Classification and Statutory requirements.
The Alternative Fuel Technical Specialist will work within small project teams, dedicated to conversion projects and will necessitate direct engagement with clients, Flag Administrations, shipyards, machinery and equipment manufacturers and suppliers, supported by LR experts worldwide, in order to resolve the challenges as they occur.
