Piping & Pressure Plant Technical Specialist

 

The Role

 

A vacancy exists in the Technical Policy team of LR’s Technical Directorate for an experienced Piping & Pressure Plant Specialist to serve as technical lead for all piping and pressure plant matters across the organisation. The technical lead will ensure LR continues to be recognised as a world leading technical authority and will provide technical leadership and technical direction in respect of both established piping and pressure plant technologies, but also novel and emerging technologies driven by decarbonisation in both the marine industry and offshore. Externally, the technical lead will advise and guide LR’s clients, be they ship owners, ship operators, shipyards, equipment suppliers or regulators. Internally, the technical lead will advise, guide and support LR’s technical specialists, surveyors, client account managers, business development and marketing teams to ensure the successful delivery of LR’s products and services.

 

The successful applicant will have extensive experience in both the design and the design appraisal of piping and pressure plant in a technical leadership role, both in marine and offshore oil and gas applications including floating installations, fixed installations and terminals.  An in-depth knowledge of marine classification and offshore certification requirements, including LR & IACS, and related statutory conventions and related instruments, including SOLAS, MARPOL, IMO MSC Resolutions and Circulars, is essential as is full familiarity with relevant international, national and industry engineering standards including ISO, ASME, API etc. The successful applicant will have demonstrable competence and experience in the design and design appraisal of a wide range of marine and offshore piping and pressure plant at least including boilers, cryogenic fuel and cargo tanks, fired and un-fired pressure vessels, pressure vessels for human occupancy, submersible structures and their associated pressure and piping systems. The successful applicant will also be fully familiar with design and/or design appraisal of novel designs undertaken in accordance with the IMO alternative design and arrangement regulations and associated guidelines.

 

In addition to familiarity with the design, knowledge of the materials, manufacturing, inspection and testing and quality assurance of marine piping and pressure plant is required. Additionally, the successful applicant will also have significant experience in undertaking stress analyses using industry standard applications for piping systems and pressure vessels including IMO Type C tanks. A knowledge of structural engineering and naval architecture in a submarine context would be a distinct advantage, as would knowledge of risk assessment in marine and offshore applications.

 

 

What do we ask from you?

 

Qualified Professional Engineer with extensive marine engineering design and design appraisal experience and an in-depth knowledge of Classification and Statutory regulation.

 

Strong technically, with excellent communication skills and a willingness to facilitate solutions to the implementation of energy transition in the maritime sector. Capable of making technical decisions at a high level and operating unsupervised.

 

  • Knowledge of classification and statutory processes and procedures commensurate with practical experience in design or design appraisal of a wide variety of vessel types
  • Excellent command of the English language - the work will involve producing guidance, procedures and Technical Reference Material for Surveyors
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution
  • Chartered Engineer status
  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd's Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme)
  • Proficiency in the use of computer Apps and tools desirable.
