We are currently looking for a specialist to play a key role in the working of the F & S Section, carrying out complex examination of ship arrangements, giving pragmatic advice to colleagues and clients, also to mentor less experienced colleagues.


What are you going to do?

The Fire & Safety Section (hereinafter “F & S”) within the Trieste Technical Support Office has strong specialisation in the design review of the Passenger Ships and Yachts, with more than 30 passenger ships projects and more than 50 mega yachts projects reviewed since 1999.

The F & S Section mainly carries out design appraisal and consultancy in the areas of yacht and passenger ship appraisals according to a range of statutory codes and rules. Other areas the F & S Section covers are naval and cargo ship approvals. The work the F & S Section carries-out has helped cement LR’s position as the leading class society for passenger ships.

The F & S Section also plays a leading role in the implementation of new IMO and IACS regulations and provides guidance and clarification to both LR colleagues and clients worldwide.

The F & S Section is also at the forefront of new goal-based regulations with work covering innovative vessel arrangements approved using alternative design and arrangement regulations, risk-based analysis and fire engineered solutions.

Working with LR at this key time with major changes in the marine regulatory framework will offer an excellent challenge to the right applicant with work on number of new projects which are at the forefront of marine technology.


Reporting to the Team Leader the key responsibilities are:

  • Design appraisal of passenger ship and yachts arrangements to various statutory codes and rules in a consistent and timely manner
  • Assistance and coordination of new rules and regulations relating to fire and safety and various other statutory requirements. 
  • Conducting occasionally site visits at various ship yards and client sites as required to successfully complete projects. 
  • Contributing fire and safety expertise to risk-based project teams to ensure project outcomes are met. 
  • Actively seeking to ensure client satisfaction and to generate new opportunities with our clients.


What do we ask from you?

  • Demonstrable experience in the marine design appraisal of yachts and passenger ships.
  • Broad knowledge of SOLAS, other international regulations (e. g. FTP Code, FSS Code, LSA Code, COLREG) and yacht statutory codes (including but not limited to MCA REG Yacht Code).
  • Basic project management techniques are desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Fire Protection and fire engineering techniques.
  • Education to degree level from a recognised university or equivalent.
  • Good communication skills, including technical report writing, having the ability to adapt and work to tight deadlines.
  • Good general appreciation of marine industry standards and practices.
  • Previous experiences in a Classification Society would be appreciated.
  • Italian mother tongue and fluent in English (spoken and written).
  • Chartered/Professional qualification and a member of a relevant professional institution is desirable.
